med school loan question

I have about 9,000 credit card debt and 16,000 student loan my credit has been good up until last year (i was late on some payments) my rating is 650. I am applying to a foreign med school and wonder if it would be possible for me to obtain private loans? Should I consolidate my credit card debt? I don't have to start paying the student loans until jan 05 ......If any one has any knowledge that can help I would be grateful thank you
