I just noticed this section, and trying to figure out everyones motivation to try and enfore CC policies in a retail store. Why do you care if they ask for ID? Is it really worth the stress of arguing & fighting the store clerk who asks it, especially when they are likely following their own story policies/manager's direction (and likely don't even understand the policy & why you're upset)?

It seems easier to report the problem (if you really think it is) to either the corporate office or store manager, instead of fighting with the clerk.

I HAVE A PERMIT TO DRIVE A CAR/TRUCK...IT IS NOT A PERMIT TO USE MY SIGNED CREDIT CARD

NO LAW SAYS I MUST SHOW ID TO USE MY SIGNED CREDIT CARD

ASKING FOR ID AS A REQUIREMENT TO USE A CREDIT CARD IS A VIOLATION OF THE CREDIT CARD POLICY

DO YOU REALLY WANT SOMEBODY (you don't know) HAVING ACCESS TO YOUR...

...DRIVER'S LICENSE NUMBER

...STREET ADDRESS

...CITY

...STATE

...ZIP CODE

...WEIGHT

...EYE COLOR

...DOB

MY LICENSE WAS SIGNED 15 to 20 YEARS AGO...what signature is better to use the DL SIGNATURE or THE ONE THE BACK OF THE CARD???

I DON'T "FIGHT"

I do show them the written credit card policy that I carry in my wallet (in that place some carry EXPENSIVE CASH)

"IF" they refuse to back down (THE ID IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE SALE) I take my card and walk

(after I make sure the sale is voided or aborted)

Why do you care if they ask for ID?

because it's none of their business.

The store will claim it's for the customer's protection- but it isn't. Handing over ID doesn't give the customer any additional protections they don't already have via the signature verification.

It does give shady register clerks information about me that I may not want them to have though. My address, DOB, etc is not their business.

Suppose they asked you for your mother's maiden name and the CVV number off the back of the card, "for verification", of course. Would you give them that too? You have to draw the line somewhere, and the merchant's agreement requirements seem a logical choice.

No kidding. Four posts, and none of them really helpful.

And all four within 16 minutes of each other. Must've really weighed heavily on the mind.

If it is on the card, they are more than welcome to have it (some stores use the CVV at point-of-sale to fight off counterfeit cards.)

If it isn't on the card, then it's none of your business.

It doesn't bother me at all. I rather like the idea of a cursory attempt to prevent fraudulent charges.

This doesn't rank in the top 1000 of things I get worked up over.

“Showing Photo ID to pay a restaurant Bill??â€

It really doesn't bother me either way (being forced to show id, or not), it's just people in this forum are so against showing id# that they will be inconvenienced and leave the establishment, and then have to go to another store if someone asks for id. My whole reason for this post is trying to figure out why some people get so upset. Seems like a silly thing to get mad at, and even sillier to actually get mad at the clerk who’s asking for it.

Also when I'm asked for an id/signature, I feel like a celebrity!!!

So how do you suppose showing ID protect us, since anyone can find plenty of places to use a stolen card (without ID)?

How do underage COLLEGE KIDS get ID's that say they are 21+

Even go to a border state like south of SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA...FAKE ID's are not that hard to find

...and "SOME" think it is required by some LAW the way some places ask for it...some people don't know how to say NO
