Thanks. One question, It says we are anonymous, however if they connect to our account info, then wouldn't they have access to our information ie. account#'s, name, address, SS# etc.?

Anybody here use or familiar with Mint.com and how it works? is it safe and really free?

Choirlady, I'm just a humble newbie, and a poor old country dumbass at that, but in my opinion none of these web 2.0 sites are totally safe. They are free to the user, but they have to make money some how. I think they do it by selling information about your spending habits so that other companies can target you. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be 'targeted." I don't know for sure, but I don't trust them. I signed up for mint for awhile but ended up deleting my account because I didn't want anyone having that much confidential information about me.

Just sayin...

They make money by providing targeted offers direct to you - this is done via analysis of your account activity / credit profile. It is as secure as your online banking profile. You do provide Mint with your account info / passwords.

If you are worried about such things - online banking really isn't for you...

In my experience - mint is a nice way of seeing where your money goes. It really isn't all that useful in terms of managing my own budget. I require a "forecast" function... allowing me to see where I will be next month / month after that. I ended up modifying a spreadsheet from here, and adding to it. I recommend you try it.

I've been using Mint.com for a couple of years now and have found it to be very safe and secure - at least as far as I can tell. However like one-one said, they have to make money somehow and I haven't bothered to read the long and lengthy TOS like most folks. Tread carefully.

As for the service, it's fantastic. It's great to see a large picture of everything in one place.

I thought the service was pretty awesome, but when I switched banks, it was one of the banks that wouldn't work correctly with their software. Also, ING stopped updating for the same reason so I cancelled my account.

I can see why people don't want to be targeted, I don't blame you, I like to limit what is marketed to me when I can.

That's why I prefer Quicken Online.

In some ways you're right not to want to be targeted. A site like Mint.com has enough access to your financial life where they should be able to quite reliably predict what you might buy, and where you are likely to buy it from. That gives them a huge edge in marketing, as it enables them to put an offer in front of you that you're very likely to at least have some interest in.

Its the same idea as sites like Upromise. They compile data and target marketing to you in an effort to get you to make a purchase either somewhere different from where you would otherwise, or to make a purchase you wouldn't make if left to your own judgement.

It is free but as to safe I have no idea! My money is still in my accts and no funny business has been going on....unless of course they hide that from me when I look at my transactions.

I have used Mint.com for several months now. I really like it. I think it is nice to see all basic account info in one place. Plus, it makes it easier to keep track of funds and accounts.

I have used Mint since it was in beta. I currently use it to keep track of my credit cards rather than logging into a bunch of different sites. I know which ones I am not using this month and what the approximate balances of the others should be. Very handy.
