Yeesh! Are you tired of merchants pushing debit? Below is what has happened to me in recent weeks.

Cashier:That'll be $8.64

Me: Credit(loud and clear)

*hands over card*

*cashier swipes and hands me pin pad*

M: Credit, not debit.

C: Oh, right, you said credit.

M: Yes.

Cashier: That comes to $6.89

*hands over card*

C: Debit, right?

M:Credit.

C: oh, credit, ok.

I know they save the percentage, but they still have to pay the base fee...

6.89-.35= 6.54

6.89*0.967= 6.66-.30= 6.36

.18 cents difference? They really need to save that to survive?

I have had good experiences at a local chinese place though- they actual looked above the visa logo, saw it wasn't debit didn't say a word :).

18 (not .18 ) cents is a huge percentage of the profit on a $6 sale for an average retailer. They'd likely more than double the profitibility of the business if they could make that extra margin on every sale. It seem trivial to you, but it's a huge deal to the store.

I agree. That's huge. You take the 18 cents on every $6 transaction all day, all week, all year and then you've got something...

I love the cashiers that ask debit or credit when you hand them an Amex. ;)

TELL THEM--->"IT WILL SHOW UP ON MY CREDIT CARD STATEMENT NO MATTER WHAT ONE YOU PUSH"

Hmm, I have never received a PIN for debit transaction on any Amex card (Amex Gold, Amex Blue, Amex Blue Cash, Amex Starwood, USAA Amex, Citi Amex, BOA Amex).. NONE came with a PIN.

It was just a JOKE

With "CREDIT DEBIT" or "PIN DEBIT" it is still going to come out of your checking account balance sooner or later

I know it was a joke, just that these cashiers must see these debit amex's all the time. I think that after seeing a few hundred and all being credit you would save your breath asking.

Haven't been to Amex (real one) in awhile, perhaps due to all the FR's they now offer debit.

Let them ask all they want...it is not something worth getting worked up for, especially since in many areas, people spending small amounts like described here ARE using debit. Too many on CB forget that not everyone is a rewards whore.

I love the customers that tell me "credit" when I clearly know they are handing me a credit card... as if I am an salamander..OR the customers that say "debit" after I tell them that we do not support debit but since it has a Visa/MC logo it can be run as credit...One even told me, "but I have bankruptcy, don't run it as credit!"

Probably because enough people they run into ARE salamanders, so they're just nipping the idiocy in the bud.
