I have a SL with direct loans in good standing (deferred). In 2004, I was late for 30 days and 60 days. In July, I sent them a GW asking for the lates to be removed. Within a week, I got a reply form letter that said they were unable to remove them because I had not included a copy of my credit reports.

So, I immediately followed up with a short letter thanking them and including the 1-page portion of my SL reporting from each of the 4 major bureaus. Never got a reply this time and nothing changed.

Today, I decided to assume they never got the letter. So I re-dated my original GW letter and attached the 1-page CR's again.

I'm sure its a long-shot, but is this likely to work? Anybody had success with GW with DL?

On a side note, why is there no legitimate way to "rehabilitate" a minor issue such as a old late payment. The only way to get a fresh start is to default on the loan and then rehab it? IMO, this should seriously be addressed if I'm understanding this correctly. /rant

Tstein, do you happen to have a copy of that GW letter you used for the DL to get the lates removed? I'll admitt too that I've contemplated the idea of intentionally defaulting just to qualify for rehab in order to get lates removed. LOL. If there is a way to rehab a "small issue", I'm personally unaware of it. Anyone else got any ideas?

Dont be late? lol

Unfortunately student loans, as a condition of their guarantee with the federal government, are not subject to goodwills. It happens from time to time but its most likely more by accident than by design.

EDIT:

This is a sticky above btw
