define my monthly take home as X

define her monthyl take home as Y

allowance = A

A = f(X+Y)

or

A = f(X)

so if A is to be 10% of X and/or Y

A = .1(X+Y)

or

A = .1(X)

which is more fair?

A= [(X+Y)-(e+s)] /2 where e= household expenses and s=money to savings and investments.

I guess the optimal allowance depends on what the two of you feel you contribute to the relationship, and how you value what you contribute to the relationship.

You make a touch more than 2.5x what she makes, but maybe she cleans the house, does all the cooking and shopping, on top of working. There is certainly value there, and I would adjust the allowances accordingly.

Now, if you work full time, and she works 20 hours a week and spends the other 20 shopping and drinking coffee with the girls, maybe .10(Y) is more appropriate.

I like to think I'd keep things equal between myself and a spouse, but my ex and I made about comparable money, and somehow I ended up paying for everything all the time, and she was perpetually broke.

I make significantly less than she does. X = .38Y

But I agree that in general home upkeep is hugely valuable. :rolleyes:

I bet you think its even more valuable if you're doing the upkeep!

My brain's a little fuzzy... by close of business today I'll have been in the office 150 hours in the previous 14 days...
