RIPOFF ALERT: NETSPEND

I received a netspend card totday in the mail - what a scam this looks to be! It says I "requested" it from their "website" but that is not possible for many reasons.... when you call the 866-387-7363 # the first thing you have to do is enter the card #, then press "1 to confirm you have read the terms and want to continue"... apparently you cannot get to a human being without "accepting" the card!

The fine print is a joke: $19.99 activation fee, $9.99 per transaction fee (so if you add money to the card that is considered a "transaction", if you use the card to pay for something with your money that is considered a "transaction"... man, buying a $5.00 item could easily cost you $25.00!!!!

This is horrible and I'm sure these jerks make lots of money from unsavy consumers.... outrageous!

I've sent a letter along with the cut card to the NJ State Attorney Generals office in hopes it helps but jerks like this right out of business.

BEWARE NETSPEND !!!!

Looks fee-ridden and I can't stand prepaid offers but their NetSpend premier offers better terms if you are considering the card. You need a paycheck DD of $500 or more once per calendar month.

If you don't plan to use it for purchases or ATM withdrawals, it offers a very decent savings rate. Haven't checked out their offer and I'm not necessarily recommending it but if you're planning to use the card in the exact opposite way to how they intend it, it may pay off. Offered by some unknown supposedly FDIC insured bank.

It's easy to upgrade once you have a NetSpend account, so first you need to complete your order for a NetSpend card. Then you just need to have a minimum of $500 directly deposited to your account in any one calendar month and we'll automatically upgrade you and send you a new Premier card.

No Loading Fees

You won't pay fees to have your checks directly deposited to your card. Say goodbye to check cashing fees!

Unlimited Purchase Transactions for $5 per month

This is our best pricing! When you are a NetSpend Premier cardholder, you can make as many purchases as you want for only $5 per month. That adds up to big savings.

$10 Purchase Cushion

We'll cover you when you're up to $10 short on a purchase FOR FREE. We'll simply deduct that amount from your next deposit or load.

5.00% APY† Savings Account

Watch your money grow in a NetSpend Savings account with a superior interest rate.* This is a special rate reserved exclusively for our Premier customers.

Wow! This is a terrible deal, you might as well just cash your paycheck at the grocery store if you don't have access to a bank account. I don't see why anyone with a bank account would use this.

Excuse me, you are reading it wrong, you get the card in the mail... activate via phone or online for free, take it to a reload center and deposit $10 on it to pay for the card, from then you can deposit how much you want on the card at the reload center and use it as a debit card, you only pay monthly if you choose to, with the pay as you go plan you only pay $1 for a credit transaction a debit transaction. I have had them for 4 years and never had a problem.

Check out a bank that is inside Walmart, a lot of times those banks have second chance checking accounts, and yea they have a monthly fee usually around $10 a month, but that would be a lot cheaper than using greendot or netspend. usually in the chexsystems thread here on CB they list good banks, and let you know which ones are scammers.
