The only issue here: why did Amex take the AA?

I have no doubt it is AmEx's policy for CSRs to refer an account for review if a cardholder calls and asks any variation of the question "how much available credit do I have?". Just another case to add to the list, like the people who were on vacation out of the country, or the people who were on their honeymoon, and in both cases had called ahead to advise AmEx of their plans, but still had their accounts suspended.Like a card company is really supposed to car about someone's dog, LOL!

George could tell her what happens when you call AmEx for a responsible proactive reason ...

My guess? Calling to ask "how much available credit do I have" is a huge red flag for them.

It's not quite as bad as calling your insurance company to ask if they pay out in the event of suicide, but it's the same idea.My guess? Calling to ask "how much available credit do I have" is a huge red flag for them.
Some people haven't come to terms with the fact that they are in a potentially adversarial (if sometimes mutually beneficial) position relative to the bank. You are a counterparty, and they are not going to ignore risk signals from a counterparty.

They not only "don't care" - they might do worse.

On topic
I wonder if you told them your going on a trip, then they deny you to use the use of a card when you get there. Some people still thing debit cards suck, go figure.

If you used a debit card, this would not happen.
The vet would have released Fluffles and you would be home within an hour.
That depends on what you daily authorization limit is. They range from $300.00 to no limit. Depends on the bank.

I've put big charges on Amex that didn't get flagged and had small ones get flagged by fraud department (had to call in).
Fraud prevention aside, sounds like any unusual activity can set off their credit dept/CLD'ers.
With any issuer these days YMMV.
==>Carry a backup. I am surprised the vet even accepts Amex (merchant fees).

$1100 would probably exceed the daily limit or trigger a fraud alert(with the bank or CU).

I run into issues with customers all the time at CHRISTMAS TIME (especially BLACK FRIDAY)I thought daily limits on Debit Cards were only used for the ATMs..
Never knew you had a daily limit on a regular transaction.
Wonder if i even have one....
You can have a NUMBER OF TRANSACTIONS LIMIT
You can also have a TOTAL SALE LIMIT
AT P.O.S.

What is even worse it varies by bank.
Limit One example:
Atm transactions limit
pin purchase limit (usually lower)
signature purchase limit
Limit two example:
Atm transactions limit
pin & signature purchase limit (The same)
Limit three example
Limit to how many times you can swipe the card in a day but that is rare.
Most banks consider the atm limit separate from the daily pos limits but a few dont.

George what does the terminal say, when someone goes over their daily limit or transaction limit?
George, I dont know if the place you work takes pin and signature debit cards.
If this happens again.
If ran through as a signature transaction, have the customer run it through as a pin
If ran through as a pin transactions, have the customer run it through as a signature.
Like I said in my other post, some banks have different limits for pin and signature.

Unless the customer did not have the money in his/her checking/savings to pay for the visit to the vet. . .If you used a debit card, this would not happen.
The vet would have released Fluffles and you would be home within an hour.
