Who exactly are they? We get notices from them about (some of?) DH's loans every so often, which we pretty much ignore except to stick in a file somewhere as DH's loans are all in deferment.

Direct Loans is the servicer for loans dispersed by the Department of Education. It is never a good idea to simply ignore letters from a servicer. I have seen many times that cause a person to go into default when, simply by answering one of the letters it could have been avoided.

I guess IGNORE was a bad word - we open them, of course, but they never say we're supposed to DO anything yet as DH is still in school full time. So we file them.
