at a restaurant when I produced a signed CC? :aggressive: and no, I didn't put this in the Visa/MC policies forum..ços but seriously I wanted to ask.. when did this start, is this a new trend or uninformed server? or do I look extra shady? If I couldn't produce ID, since I carry no cash...I wonder how they would have got paid...

What?? You didn't want the Continental canned response?

It is against the agreement between the card issuer and the merchant. AmEx, Discover, Visa, MasterCard are all the same I believe. It is my understanding that they are supposed to look at the siggy on the card versus the siggy on the receipt. They are not supposed to ask for ID.

GEORGE would be a good one to ask about this. Besides his AmEx rants-which BTW I get a kick out of-he also rants about the ID/NOID/SEEID/SIGGY debate. CreditMatters is also well versed in the same issue.

For some reason Wal-Mart is always asking to see my ID when I pay with a CC and sign on the computer pad. The usual excuse is that the computer pad did not "see" my name or could not "read" my name as signed. "Sorry. Against your agreement with MasterCard. Get a manager if you want to push the issue or restock the shelves with $200+ worth of groceries." Sounds curt and offhanded, but I got tired of dealing with it a long time ago. As if anyone's signature on the back of the CC looks like that electronic crap!

There is one of those canned responses

But, I believe that Visa and Master Card are the only ones with that in their agreement. I am nearly positive that Amex does allow it and not sure at all about Discover.

THEY ARE JUST WASTING INK TO PUT...

"AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE"

"NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED"

"VOID IF NOT SIGNED"

The sticker is put on the front for no reason either

Remove the sticker after calling to activate and sign the back of the card

WOULDN'T THEY JUST HAVE NO SIGNATURE STRIP "IF" THEY DIDN'T WANT YOU TO SIGN???

WOULDN'T THEY JUST PRINT CID "IF" THAT IS WHAT THEY WANTED YOU TO DO???

Simply call 1-800-VISA-911. They will walk the salamander cashier step-by-step through proper card acceptance procedure.

CREDIT CARD SIGNATURE IS ALL THE ID NEEDED

When you pay for merchandise with a Visa card, MasterCard, or American Express any store that accepts these cards should accept yours too, no questions asked. It's part of the deal that merchants agree to when they become participating members.

They must check your signature and the card - electronically or by telephone - to be sure it's valid. Once the answer comes up yes, they can go ahead and charge. They can't ask you for any further identification - not a license plate number, Social Security number, proof of address, phone number or picture ID.

Your personal ID isn't needed because Visa, MasterCard, and American Express all guarantee payment on cards that have been properly checked. If the issuer mistakenly authorizes a sale on a bad card, it should make good. MasterCard says that merchants receive instant settlement. The contract MasterCard merchants sign specifically prevents them from asking for personal ID.

Unfortunately, not all merchants play by the rules. Some, apparently, haven't read them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

MasterCard wants to hear about merchants who break their rules. Send the name and address and an account of what happened to MasterCard WorldWide 2000 Purchase St. Purchase, NY 10577. The merchant's bank will get a stiff letter, ordering it to investigate and bring the offending store into line - or pay a $2,000 fine.

Visa enforces the same rules as MasterCard. "When we hear about a violation, we ask the bank that signed the merchant to get together with the merchant and see that the practice is stopped," Visa representative states. To report a merchant, send a letter to the bank that that issued your Visa card or call 1-800-VISA-911.

American Express also prohibits merchants from asking for IDs. "All a merchant is supposed to do is take an imprint, make sure the signature matches and swipe the card through the terminal, to get authorization."

While I understand the point of *not* needing to show an ID when using a CC, I do not mind AT ALL when asked for ID. Several years ago my wallet was stolen and someone had a big time using some of my CCs. I guess all those merchants should of asked for ID, then they *might* of realized that the perp wasn't me. (And I keep my ID in a zippered pouch in my purse, so it wasn't in my wallet for the thief to use).

Those merchants could have checked the signature and known it wasn't you.

Signatures are absurdly easy to forge. Ask any middle schooler.
