Since January I have been working night and day to improve my credit scores and I received my first ever credit card - a Target Guest card - a few months ago. I was denied for all 3 of the HH trio and Walmart. So I was pretty discouraged even after I received my Target card.

After much reading and questioning I decided to give DCU a try. I called and explained my situation (stay at home mom, not wanting to put my husband on the account with me) and asked if I could get approved for a VISA on my own. This was on Friday. The rep told me that I would have to call back today. I was so nervous. Then this morning I called and a different rep told me that they had no answer yet, but hold on and she'd try to get one for me. In less than 10 minutes - I WAS APPROVED FOR A DCU VISA WITH A $1,000 LIMIT! :D:D:D

I am crying, I can't believe it. I have never had a real credit card in my own name before. It is all because of CB. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What income did you put down? My sister is in your situation and I was telling her about DCU but since only her husband has income she did not think she could get an account.

Thanks for the congrats. I am hopping up and down - I can't wait to get the card, no matter how ugly it is!

As an adoptive parent of two older children from US foster care, I receive a monthly subsidy. This allows me to be a stay at home mom, and I can claim it as income as well. It is 100% tax free and it is in my name, not my husband's. So even though I don't work, I do have an income, if that makes sense.

The DCU reps did ask me some questions about it - I think the same questions they would ask if it was normal employment income - have you been receiving it for at least two years, and do you have stubs to prove it? Both those answers were yes. They also asked how long I would get the payments, and it's until my kids are 18, or 21 if they go to college. They're 13 & 14 now, so they counted it as income, no problem. They also asked about rent, and I said that my husband paid that, not me. So that didn't go into my debt-to-income ratio.

I was REALLY worried that I wouldn't qualify because the income amount is so low. But since it is tax-free they multiplied it times 1.25% and brought the total subsidy to $18,000 a year. Which still isn't much, but I guess it was enough to qualify for a $1,000 limit! I did ask about using my husband's income, but it would have to be a joint account then, and they would have pulled his credit.

I am just SO excited about having a real credit card. I am done applying for now. One store card and one visa are enough for me. :)

Id like to say congrats also, but for a different reason.

It takes someone special to give there life, love, and hard work to raise and care for someone elses children.

Your kids have good parents. :D

BTW, congrats on the card also.

Thanks georgiaboy! My kids are wonderful, and there is no doubt that they were meant to be mine. I don't think of them as someone else's children, I think of them as being born in my heart. It just took them a little longer to make their way home.
