I was bored at work so I took the Credit Union list that anyone can join and expanded on that information. Below each credit union in this list you will find the Membership Eligibility link, outside association eligibility, the cost, and last the link to the associations page so you can sign up. Obviously each CU has ways to get in for free, but I compiled this list for people who can't get in through meeting regular eligibility requirements.

I tried to find the lowest cost route for becoming elibigle for each CU through joining outside organizations or associations. If you find a less expensive way to get in the back door of these CU's, please post and share your findings.

Lastly, before you go joining associations, please DOUBLE CHECK each CU's eligibility page and maybe even give them a call to confirm. Wouldn't want people wasting membership fees to find out they still can't join the CU. I take no resonsibility if you don't double check on your own first to confirm the route is correct. I simply looked all the information up, I have NOT confirmed any of these findings.

Maybe we could also add to this list with the CRA Pull, Hard/Soft that each CU pulls.

PS - Patelco is the only IFFY information I found for joining. If anyone can elaborate how they got in with Patelco without using the regular eligibility requirements, please do so. I found that information searching google and it's the only way I could find to possibly get in.

Does NASA FCU have decent limits for people with my credit profile (click my name for info)? Are they as good as Navy Federal? That seems to be an easy one to join.

I love Nasa (my 2nd favorite CU) but they are a lot more conservative then Navy especially to people with less then average credit.

Looking at your profile I would not expect much out of Nasa because of the lower limits you have and the BK.

I humbly agree...

There are few nationals as liberal as NFCU.

Boy you are picking the hard ones :lol:. Penfed is funny, it took me almost 2 years to get into them (decline after decline after decline), I disliked them for quite a bit of time. I have now been in with them for above 23 months are think they are one on the best CU's out there.

I would say try Penfed over Nasa at this point, but it's really kind of a toss up looking at your profile. My advice would be to look at Patelco and as much as I to hate to say this Justice. Justice is very quirky, has a crazy ID process and not for people with great credit BUT seem to be good to people with credit similar to yours. If I were in your situation I'd start with Patelco, they approved me just under 3 years post BK and have stood by me and have been great to me ever since, going on 5 years.

Matter is going to love me for recommending Justice ;)

That's correct. I had already joined through NPTA but I asked about this last week when I had to call them. You have to be an employee to qualify through United.

OP: Good find. Here's one to add to one's quest for their new CUs:

http://www.findacreditunion.com

This site searches for credit unions that you might be eligible to join based on your employer or occupation, current/former school or alumni, or zip code.

Some neat features include one that allows to to filter to display CUs that are XX miles from my zip code and links to MapQuest.

Example search result page:

The matches for your employer or occupation search are:

* Credit Union of Georgia

* CSRA Federal CU

* Dillard's FCU

* DOCO Regional FCU

* Five Star CU

* Georgia FCU

* Gwinnett FCU

* Marshland Community FCU

* MEA Federal CU

* Pinnacle CU

* State Employees CU

* Valdosta Teachers FCU

Click for matches close to your zip code.

The matches for your school search are:

* CDC FCU

* Georgia FCU

* Georgia Guard CU

* Human Services Emp. CU

* State Employees CU

Click for matches close to your zip code.

The matches for your zipcode search are:

* Delta Community Credit Union

* US Federal CU

cmoz, cool website! thanks for that link.

You're welcome. I was surprised to see more than a dozen CUs that I can legitimately get in that are just around my backyard! I'm tired of the one I've been with for more than 10 years. Playtime :lol: !

Yeah, there were at least 3-4 on the list that I had never even heard of. Some only had one branch, so they must be pretty tiny.

Just beware that most small local CUs can be really tight and it was my experience that they consider a lot of available credit as a problem. See my "CWs need not apply" thread.

Good point, Shawnee. Once you get the likes of Penfed, NASA, etc... it's must be hard to back to your tiny CU, eh :) ? For me right now, if it doesn't have FEDERAL in its name, I'd set in on my chopping block... Thinking about it right now.

Best to complete your homework before joining any CU, large, small, local or not.

Penfed was the same with me initially, decline after decline (this was when I had a LOT of debt on my CR) and got mad enough I closed everything including the membership share. Fast-forward a year later, I was still able to login online, but it was giving me an error. Since I no longer had that debt on my CR, I tried applying for a new savings and checking online, and poof I was in again. Then over the next couple months it was approval after approval for a CC and LOC, and became the creditor I have the most credit with.
