Question regarding institutional student loans

I have an loan from an institution that I attended back in 2005-2006 and was wondering whats the best wayt o take care of this. Ideally I would not like to pay it and have it removed from my credit report, but Im guessing since thats not an option what other things could I do? My problem arose because I was in New Orleans pre katrina and since I didn't return post Katrina all federal aid was cut off to me and I was forced to borrow directly from the school. I owe ~10k and I was hoping that maybe there was a way I could offer 50-60% and have it removed from my credit report or something. Any help is greatly appreciated.
