Past Due Tuition to Private University

Long story short, I have some tuition debt with a private university which is about 6 months old now. I'm not quite in the position to pay it off yet, but I might be able to work out a way to take care of it in one lump sum payment soon. That said, the original amount of the tuition is somewhere around $1700, but with fees and all the collection letter says that I owe $2400 and counting.

 

I've been thinking about contacting the University directly via certified mail to explain my situation and tell them I'm willing to pay whatever I owe + the fees they have incurred directly to them as long as the credit agency goes away and also deletes any information related to it from my credit record. Any advice from someone who has dealt with this before? Would this actually work? I'd greatly appreciate it-- thanks!

Depends. In some states a debt owed to a private non-profit university has no SOL and can be collected by tax refund offset.

The school more than likely has the CA under contract, which means that the CA gets paid no matter what. In house collectors at the school will simply refer accounts on to the CA . Also, writing a letter would be almost counter productive. When we got letters for accounts being worked by a CA, we didnt even bother to read the letter. We would just forward it on.
