Federal Tax Return Offset Telephone Number

If I understand correctly, in the next few months student loan guarantors will be submitting updated annual lists to the U.S. Treasury Financial Management Services office telling them who they consider to still be in default and not in repayment (or haven't made enough rehab payments to be considered in "repayment").

 

I came across this phone number at the website for the Financial Management Service which is the bureau of the U.S. Treasury, which I called to find out if, when I do file my return, they have a debt on record that will result in my tax refund being taken or "offset":

I plan to call this number periodically and hopefully, since I have been making rehab payments since last May, sometime in September or later the recorded information will tell me that I no longer have a debt on record for which my refund will be intercepted.

 

Has anyone had experience calling this number - was the information updated and accuarate based on your rehab payment history?

When it comes to stafford loans, your school will determine who the guarantor is depending on whether they are a FFELP or Direct lender. FFELP often will give you some choice of servicer. However with Direct loans there are no choices.

Update for me: I've been calling this number every few days for the last month - finally, finally, today I got a message saying that I have no debts! Woo Hoo! I just made payment #7 of 9 for rehab.

 

And Thanks again, Cynic, Lynne, and all for all of your time spent reading and posting so that other's may benefit from your experience. What a weight off my shoulders from the very day when I arranged for rehab.
