Did you walk??? (LET THEM KEEP THEIR STUFF)

Did you use CASH???

I used cash, there was no other place to but Ting, Pink Ting and DG Orange in the area. That soda is great.

When you do your report, be sure to mention that they (read: VISA, etc) also missed out on revenue because you "had to" use cash.

Alright, that is good to know for next time, I already called VISA-911 and reported MC online.

Your credit card company DIDN'T GET THEIR CUT...

"IF" you credit card has "REWARDS" I would ask for some POINTS/MILES/CASH for the loss of the sale

...they may give it to you...AND ADD IT TO THE "FINE" THAT THEY GIVE THE BUSINESS

I would have had to WALK since I don't have $7.80 "CASH"

...assuming they wouldn't have backed-off after I pulled out the CREDIT CARD POLICY out of my wallet

Sounds good about that reward thing, I get 1% back.

It actually takes little to no time. Usually, all of the information you need about the merchant (name, address, phone number) is right on the receipt! Very easy! You can make the call as you are driving home (speaker or earpiece of course), or while you are sitting in front of your computer. You don't need to sit down and "just" report a merchant. You can do many other things at the same time. Do it while you are opening your mail, etc..

I have have found some consolation in that Ask Visa Corporate email address. While I email them very few words (concise, bullets) reporting some violation they reply with some form text with no real next steps on thier part. At least I feel I gave them a complaint without having to report my personal info to them either.

MC/Visa definitely take action against merchants who do not follow their rules about ID or surcharges. I can name 4 businesses in our area who have gotten a nasty-gram in the past few months. One of the merchants says that he is thinking of not taking credit cards anymore. Another merchant was pissed off and swore a competitor turned him in.

Simply call 1-800-VISA-911, press zero twice, and ask to file an "incident report" regarding a merchant violation/merchant who required ID. Crooked merchants shape-up quickly to avoid suspension. Make sure your community is 100% violation-free. <_<

I've gotten a couple merchants shut-off from accepting credit cards over repeat violations of this issue (they usually change their practice within a few hours of being shut-off; it really gets their attention).

 and over the last few months unfortunately "Continental" is still referring to cashiers as idiots.

What I find ironic is that he labels cashiers who can't follow instructions as idiots, yet he can't seem to follows not-so-gentle hints from people like LKH to quit doing the same cut-and-paste posts over and over. :P

And your point???

A select few here think that anybody that would work retail...IS AN IDIOT

Somebody in the store came up with the idea that they think they are PROTECTING the customer by asking for ID

(even if it really is not)

...AND IS A VIOLATION OF CREDIT CARD POLICY

Unsigned credit cards...different animal

I don't understand you. In the past when you've come across a post where someone has used the acronym OMFG, I've seen you take a stand about that. In all sincerity, I admired that you did that.

But ... you'll speak up and criticize blaspheming God, but you're okay with ad hominem attacks (like "idiot", "fools", "sheep") toward your fellow man during the course of speaking with or about someone with an opposing point of view ?

Or how about ... when you've perceived that discussion of Walmart on here has crossed over from civil disagreement to ridicule, you've criticized that. But by asking me what my point is on Continental and the name-calling ("idiot"), then I guess you're saying ridicule is okay if the topic is id checking.

There are no "ID checks" allowed with credit cards.

CREDIT CARD SIGNATURE IS ALL THE ID NEEDED

When you pay for merchandise with a Visa card, MasterCard, or American Express any store that accepts these cards should accept yours too, no questions asked. It's part of the deal that merchants agree to when they become participating members.

They must check your signature and the card - electronically or by telephone - to be sure it's valid. Once the answer comes up yes, they can go ahead and charge. They can't ask you for any further identification - not a license plate number, Social Security number, proof of address, phone number or photo ID.

Your personal ID isn't needed because Visa, MasterCard, and American Express all guarantee payment on cards that have been properly checked. If the issuer mistakenly authorizes a sale on a bad card, it should make good. MasterCard says that merchants receive instant settlement. The contract MasterCard merchants sign specifically prevents them from asking for personal ID.

Unfortunately, not all merchants play by the rules. Some, apparently, haven't read them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

MasterCard wants to hear about merchants who break their rules. Send the name and address and an account of what happened to MasterCard WorldWide 2000 Purchase St. Purchase, NY 10577 or call 1-800-300-3069. The merchant's bank will get a stiff letter, ordering it to investigate and bring the offending store into line - or pay a $2,000 fine. You may also report violations online:

http://www.mastercar...violations.html

Visa enforces the same rules as MasterCard. "When we hear about a violation, we ask the bank that signed the merchant to get together with the merchant and see that the practice is stopped," Visa representative states. To report a merchant, send a letter to the bank that that issued your Visa card or call 1-800-VISA-911.

American Express also prohibits merchants from asking for IDs. "All a merchant is supposed to do is take an imprint, make sure the signature matches and swipe the card through the terminal, to get authorization."

Just called a place that I reported last week..a lady from VISA actually went out to the restaurant and they took the sign down that asked for a 5.00 minimum and ID....

I actually have a call recorded where I called another place on the 5.00 minimum and they changed their policy right on the phone...and apologized for doing it as they were unaware it wasn't allowed, have gone back and they no longer require it.

2 for the good guys!

I have reported Honks twice now using the online MasterCard form for requiring photo ID before they will accept a credit card. I went back today, and they are still insisting.

Oh and to make it even more fun, a customer in the store got involved saying she does trade shows and requires ID so I was wrong. Hey lady! Just because you do it doesn't mean it's allowed!

Anyone who has a Honks in their town, please use your credit card there and report them if they require ID. Two of the locations here have required my ID.

So what now? Any other ideas?
