I have scheduled a payment to Citi tomorrow for $1000.

This is the last payment on my BT from my Home Equity Line of Credit which in turn served as a refinancing for the mortgage on my house.

So now I consider the house to be paid off in reality - not just as a result of borrowing money to pay it off.

The cars are paid for, and my other CCs (aside from the Citi) are pay-off-each month.

So, for the first time since I was in my teens, I am "out of debt"!

:P:rofl::angel:

When I turned 40, and was about 40K in credit card debt and owed almost 100K on the mortgage, it was my goal to accomplish this before my 50th birthday. It seemed like an almost impossible goal at that time. Now at the age of 49, it's almost anticlimactic.

But still worth a couple of emoticons!

2 things one no more interest deduction on your taxes

and 2 how did you do it

great job.

Well, it's been about five years since I had enough deductions to itemize, so that's nothing new... and I've not escrowed since 2002 either, so I'm used to paying the tax bills rather than sending them to the mortgage co.

I didn't do anything particularly brilliant... cut back on expenses, sure, but also started earning more income. Took advantage of very low interest rates when they became available. Mostly, just remained relentless in making sure I didn't slack off in paying things off. Drove older cars long after paying off. Still, it's not as if I've ever really deprived myself or my wife of anything we really needed or wanted.

Couple questions if you don't mind? Kids? Line of work?

That is completely awesome! Sounds like a celebration is in order. Good for you, I'm happy that you accomplished what was important to you. It's really awesome that you reached your goal, I see and hear about too many people who give up. (on their dreams, themselves, etc.)

Solid brother.

It feels good... but as I said before, somewhat anti-climactic. I could have told you six months ago the exact date - today - that I was going to be "out of debt"... having scheduled the payments that long ago on Bill Pay. (I canceled one of the payments, but made up for it later, evening the schedule out.) Kind of a boring way of doing it, wasn't it?

I didn't mention it until now, for irrationally superstitious reasons (didn't want to "jinx" it) - but it all happened "according to schedule".

CONGRATULATIONS !!!

It is a real pleasure to see someone who equates success with being debt free and who accomplished that goal the old fashioned way by frugal living, hard work and not giving into the temptations of our "throwaway" society.

Keep up the good work, you have not only made yourself debt free, but in the proccess you have helped conserve natural resources.

Thanks Why Chat!

My next goal (and one I've been working on for a while as well) is related to retirement savings.

HUGE Congratulations to you!

That is the goal we are working towards. We do have 3 children, and that does make a difference. Our youngest was born with serious and numerous health & developmental problems that we are still paying for today. (Sometimes we had to chose between his medical needs and paying the mortgage...)

But we are living way UNDER budget right now to get to the point you are at.

Thank you for the inspiration!!!!
