It is rude to ask for an ID to use a CC if a sign is not posted and it's being done to everyone and not just selected few. I would never got back to that Costco again, Lawrence NY because I think my complaint may have gone through deaf hears as I've not heard anything back from costco yet and it's been over 2 weeks.

Had I been there with you...I would have told you to say this---->"DO ME A FAVOR and call AMEX right now and tell them that we are trying to protect our mutual customer by DEMANDING ID ON A SIGNED CREDIT CARD TO COMPLETE THE SALE"well here's my input.. Last time I went to Costco in Lawrence NY I took up about $70 worth of items and was going through checkout. The cashier asked for the costco card which I handed to her. It was my sisters card as I couldn't find my card. I then gave her my Amex card. This women then goes on and ask me to show her an ID. I responded to her and told her I'm not showing you no ID. She then went on and talk about it's American Express policy to see ID and she was like it's a favor she's doing for me to charge it without no ID which I responded to her that she wasn't doing me any favor. I then said it out loud that the white woman who was ahead of me in line who gave you a gold Amex card you never asked for an ID but me being black you're asking to see ID. I then told her to give me my f card so I could get the f out the store and then walked over to customer service and complain about that blank.

I don't have one anywhere near me (50--->60 miles)
SIGN or NOT...store policy does NOT trump credit card policy in REQUIRING ID TO MAKE A PURCHASE WITH A SIGNED CREDIT CARD

Simply call 1-800-VISA-911. They will walk the idiot cashier step-by-step through proper card acceptance procedure.
How would you define "idiot"? Someone who can't take a hint or follow direction from legitimate authority, perhaps?

You gave cards with two different names...one yours and one belonging to a relative. And yet you blame the clerk for wanting you to prove you were you for the purpose of accepting the card? Those of you who write "See I.D." or some variant on your card - be careful.
I read on these boards about someone who had their card stolen. The credit card company recovered the card - and they told her it was good that she'd signed it, because if it had "See I.D." on the signature panel, it would not have been considered a valid, signed card, and she would have been liable for all the fraudulent charges.
link to thread?
lord, Jen, I don't remember. It was months ago that I read it, and searches for "fraud" or "CID" are going to turn up so many threads it would take me weeks to go through them all. I was also reading older threads in the Visa subforum - so there's no telling if that post I read was even recent.
I CAN tell you I'm positive I read that here, because it stuck out in my mind very clearly as my mother writes "CID" on her cards, and she's lost them more than once. I went home that night and told her what I'd read, and now no one in my family uses "CID" on their cards anymore.

so you used someone else's card, whose name did not match your Costco card..... and you think this is a race issue?
That is just wrong.
Also, dropping f-bombs on a cashier doesn't give you any credibility either.

My AMEX merchant's agreement said that you were NOT to ask for ID for an authorized charge under penalty of having your acceptance privileges rescinded. If it was a bad charge and AMEX authorized it, you'd never know, because the retailer always got paid.

while I tend not to show my ID....I certainly wouldn't play the race card....not only is it ridiculous, it also detracts from the REAL racial issues that exist...and IMO, the detraction is as bad or worse than the real racial issues...
I also won't raise a stink...if I choose not to show my ID, I'll walk away....end of problem

+1,000 on all counts.
You should feel lucky that they allowed you to use her costco card at all. My boyfriend tried to use his father's card (Both of who have the very same name) and they did not allow it, citing that the picture on the back of the card didn't look like him, and then asked for ID, and further cited that the drivers license number on his license did not match that of the one on file.
It is not a race issue, not even in the slightest. It is an identity issue, period.

Well anywhoo I think there is a little truth on both sides:
1. Using someone else's card is not a recipe to follow if you are hung up on the "Not Showing I.D." approach.
2. People of color are asked for ID at a greater rate (even when the cashier is of that same race).
3. Some stores 100% violate the rule because of the area demographics.
This can become extrememly offensive when a person close to you in line is not asked to show I.D.
I have no problem either way, I see stores that violate the rule 100% of the time, some that violate the rules only for people of color and others that violate the rule for anyone who fits a certain "look" regardless of race.
I know this won't settle this unfortunate arguement, but I just wanted to present a less charged P.O.V.
Trying to figure the motivations for other often low salaried employees behavior is counterproductive regardless!

So lemme get this straight...
-You go to Costo
-Gather stuff to buy
-Go to checkout
-Associate asks for your ID
-YOU PLAY THE RACE CARD because someone in front of you supposedly didnt get asked for their ID. SO, you assume you get asked for your ID because you are black LMAO.
Not cool. You have just been put on my mental ignore list.

If you've ever been to a major chain grocery store or a major chain department store like Wal-Mart, Ralph's/Krogers, etc...you are familiar with the sign-on-the-screen pad they use for credit card transactions. The screen always says, "Signature Approved" after you've signed.
What is really happening in real time? Because there have been times that my signature is barely what it should be because either I feel rushed by the 20 people in line behind me OR their pad isn't sensitive and it doesn't pick up all of the pressure points on the screen, and my signature is splotchy and pixelized.
How is the signature being digitally verified? Also, the only financial institutions who have ever asked to see my signature to keep it on file are Bank of America and E-Trade--and this is when I opened a checking account.
I'm really interested to know if there's something deep going on, or if it's just something written on the screen.

I will enlarge it to fit on a white T-SHIRT (pick your size)
I will pay for it for you
YOU WILL HAVE YOUR ID ON THE FRONT and BACK FOR EVERYBODY TO SEE
(since showing ID to people you don't know is no big deal)

LOL! Originally, I wrote something else in arabic and someone on CB didnt like the message, so I changed it to this.
About the signature on the LCD screens at the store...you can draw a swastika if you wanted to...nothing is there to keep signatures in check. A few yrs ago I drew a stick figure, and it went through. Receipt printed and nothing was said.

What are you doing about it? All violating stores must be reported immediately - 1-800-VISA-911.I see stores that violate the rule 100% of the time, some that violate the rules only for people of color and others that violate the rule for anyone who fits a certain "look" regardless of race.

I would suggest starting with places you visit often. If you go there once a week or more, work on those places first. Then you can work on the places you visit with less frequency. I've reported so many places in my area over the past year or so that now hardly any places I do business with are asking for ID anymore. And on the rare occasion I visit one, I now easily report them.

Nothing because, it is not important to me because I don't mind showing my ID and frankly I don't understand the reasoning behind not requiring I.D.?
Whenever I make a large purchase withour showing I.D. I just imagine the frustration of disputing a frausulent charge, which I have had to before!
I know this is your thing, but I honestly don't mind showing my work I.D.

The most important thing is making sure it never happens again and if any violating merchant pops-up in your community, make sure they are eliminated/brought back into line immediately - 1-800-VISA-911.IDs are anything but hard to fake. My cousin (college student) just got her first fake ID for $150.00, and it looks just like the real thing. Lo and behold, $150 and she's now 21....Voila. I myself had one when I first started college, since most of the sports bars and other places in Gville were 21+ only. I'm not saying this is legal, but it happens more often than not...I'd bet 75% of high school and college students have one, and most of them are just like the real ones, holograms and everything. You can have it say whatever name you like on it, along with your real picture.
Point is, if a thief is anything but a total idiot, he'll have already either gotten a fake ID before he goes to use the cards he stole, or he'll have cloned the info off the mag stripe on the card he stole to a new card, WELL BEFORE you ever get to see his smiling face. For a real CC fraudster, checking his ID isn't gonna do squat.
So, the net result of your insistence on IDs is probably very unlikely to stop an actual CC thief and a lot more likely to inconvenience and P.O. your true customers. Especially if they forgot their license or something. Plus, as stated here, it is definitely against the issuer's policies, and eventually someone will probably report you.
The multibillion dollar CC companies already fully protect their customers from fraud and unauthorized use, they really don't need a checkout clerk to help them out.

PHOENIX -- A new group of identity thieves is targeting shoppers in Glendale, police said.
According to Detective Grant Eaton of the Glendale Police Department, the group picks victims' pockets and -- minutes later -- creates fake identification cards from the wallets and credit cards.
"They're efficient," Eaton said. "[They have the] technology to make IDs fast [that are] good enough so they pass at a bank -- pretty amazing."
Mary Banks is one victim of this theft.
When she and her husband, Ray Banks, returned home one day, they found a message from their bank questioning a recent $2,500 credit card advance.
"We didn't even realize anything was gone until we got the message," Ray Banks said.
Someone had stolen his wife's wallet, and minutes later, a woman used the information to get a cash advance.
In another instance, the thieves made off with about $13,000 within 45 minutes, Eaton said.
Eaton said the woman captured on surveillance footage may be wearing a wig.
"This lady could be someone's grandmother -- pleasant, confident, gets it done quick," he said.
