I'm in a doctorate program with 3 years left of school. I'm seriously considering filing Chapter 7 bk. I have about $26,000 in credit card debt and cannot keep up with the minimum payments, especially since they have doubled the last couple of months. If I file BK, will I have trouble obtaining student loans, either government funded or privately funded? My father, who has excellent credit said he would co-sign if that would help. Would that make any difference? I've been an absolute wreck about this...would appreciate any input.

If you BK, you will likely be unable to get ANY private loans; the federal loans will not be affected. I would bet that it would be extremely difficult for you to get private loans, even with a guarantor, should you file BK.

cant you ask for defferment?

I remember when i am in school, I dont need to pay them.

I did defer them, but I need student loans to pay for my tuition and to live on for the next 3 years. Although I have a part time job, it hardly pays for my gas money. TxQuiltGirl, I was worried that might be the case. Currently, I'm able to get by with just federal loans, but that's because I have a stipend that pays for half of my tuition the first year. However, the next 3 years will be all on my own. Thank you for your replies.
