My husband and I filed BK in May 2005. We need to apply now for a 2005-2006 Parent Plus loan for the spring and summer quarters at my daughter's school. We are expecting to be turned down so she can receive additional aid in her name. Her school financial aid office confirmed this scenario with me last week. I found the application on line and printed it out. I see room for only one applicant. I have a steady job, my husband is unemployed. We filled the FAFSA out jointly for this year. Do we each have to fill out a Plus loan form or just one of us, and does it matter who does it?

When I talked to the financial aid office, I forgot to ask how I apply. Just go to the Sallie Mae website? Her school is listed there. I will call and confirm on Monday, but was checking if anyone here could help me in the meantime. Also, how much more is she eligible to receive as a freshman?

Thanks for your help.

Either parent can apply for a PLUS loan as long as they are on the FAFSA. Bk's need to be discharged for 3 yrs before you can be eligible for a PLUS. You can either apply online to SallieMae or the school will send you a paper pre-approval form to be completed & returned. If you apply to SallieMae online, you will get a decline and DD's school will also be notified. You can apply for any $ amt. Parents do not have to show repayment ability, just credit worthiness so DH can apply.

DD can take the decline letter to her financial aid office. As a freshman she will be offered up to an additional $4000 (most likely split between spring/summer) in addition to her $2625.

Wishing DD all the best!
