garnishment and fees

I paid off a defaulted student loan through garnishment at work. The actual garnishment and payoff was complete in October of 2005. Recently on my pay stub, I noticed that again a garnishment for student loan was being taken out of my paycheck. When I called the payroll office at mt job, I was informed that the loan guarantor had resubmited a clain of garnishment for $1700 in fees and penalties. How is this possible when they were receiving payment twice a month for over three years? After the balance which is now $1200 is paid, can they again send a garnishment for fees and penalties? Confused! Thought I was finished with this claim!?

You are legally responsible for all charges which include interest, late fees and collection costs. When the original garnishment papers were sent out, that did not include the accruing interest, so that might factor in. I have seen cases where the collection charges are not included in the initial paperwork. Did you employer just stop paying when they thought it was done? That is common...employers would stop paying and after a couple of months, the CA administering the garnishment would update the balance. No real "filing" per se.
