Hey,

This has probably been answered already, but any info on the topic would be appreciated.

I defaulted on a US. Dept. of Ed Direct Loan apprx. 2 years ago. I finally paid the thing off February 2005. US Dept. of Ed has reported to credit bureaus that it was paid off, but continues to report the default and late payment.

Is there any way to get US. Dept. of Ed to stop reporting this? Is a goodwill letter the only recourse I have? Any recommendations, helpful hints, etc.?

Thanks

A goodwill letter will not work; you defaulted on a loan, not missed a payment. There is probably not much you can do to get rid of the negative info.

Yeah, you're pretty much out of luck. Im in a similar situation, I have a little bit of recourse because when I "defaulted" I was actually in school the whole time but their was a problem with the clearinghouse reporting and because I consolidated when they were in default, now they say they cant fix it. Long story short, I have a genuine issue and they wont fix it for me, dont think they'll change a true default, if that is indeed the case.

I defaulted on my student loans as well with the US. Dept. of Education. I'm currently in rehab paying $200 a month and I was told by the CA that once I completed my year of rehab all of the negative tradelines would come of my report. And the original loan would go back to Sally Mae. Hmmm...I hope that's the case.

Hmmm..something is not right here. DOE is Direct Lending, Sallie Mae is the FFELP program...totally seperate programs. The two programs do not generally interface. Are you sure that you are not dealing with a guarantey agency??
