Virginia Sales or Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

Tax at the rate of 3% of the full purchase price, but not less than $35.00. Even if a customer receives two vehicle from a dealer in trade for one vehicle and no money changes hands, there is a minimum Sale and Use Tax of $35.00 for each vehicle at the time of titling. NO CREDIT for TRADE-IN. Sale and use tax paid when application is made for Title. Exemption from tax is allowed if previously titled in another state and applicant hold a valid assignable Title or registration issued to the applicant by another state (or foreign country) and (1) the vehicle has been owned more than 12 months; or (2) the vehicle has been owned 12 months or less and the applicant shows proof of payment of a Sales Tax in the other state; or (3) the vehicle has a manufactured gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 lbs. or more. Sales and use tax at the rate of 3% of the full purchase price will be assessed on all manufactured homes that will be situated as a dwelling. Title to a manufactured home must be applied for within 30 days after purchase or moving into Virginia. Taxes on the purchase of vehicles are paid to the DMV. WATERCRAFT SALES AND USE TAX must be paid on all new and used watercraft. The maximum tax is $2,000.00 Exemptions are: If you already owned the boat in another state; if you already paid at least 2% in another state or when you purchased the boat (evidence of payment must be shown); if you constructed the boat yourself; and if you received the boat at no cost (gift, divorce decree, deceased owner, etc.)
