Vermont or Use Tax Applicable to Registration

Credit for trade-in allowed. Purchase and use tax is due at the time or registration at the rate of 6% of the average trade-in value (NADA) if the vehicle is currently registered to you out-of-state. Credit will be given for purchase and use or sales tax paid on the vehicle to another state. If the tax paid on an out-of-state registered vehicle was equal to or greater than the Vermont tax rate, no additional tax will be due (registration and tax paid documentation is required). MILITARY PERSONNEL (including spouses) are granted a credit for taxes paid in another state toward the purchase and use tax otherwise due in Vermont. Taxes are paid to the dealer for immediate transmission to the DMV.
