Information from NADA Title & Registration Textbook 2004

 

Kansas Sales and Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

State sales tax 5.3% plus any applicable local sales taxes, paid on full purchase price LESS amount allowed for TRADE-IN. CREDIT ALLOWED for sales and use taxes paid to another state NEW RESIDENT moving to Kansas is not required to pay tax unless vehicle is newly purchased. NON-RESIDENT EXEMPT from sales tax provided vehicle will not remain in Kansas more than 10 days from date of purchase. Taxes are paid to dealers or County Treasurers. When a customer receives more than one vehicle on an even trade from a dealer and no money changes hands, no taxes are due. If a Kansas resident purchases a vehicle in a county other than their county of resident, local sales tax will be assessed, or collected by the dealer, at the rate for the county in which the transaction took place. If the purchaser’s county of residence has a higher rate local sales tax rate, the difference will be assessed at time of application.
