Information from NADA Title & Registration Textbook 2004

Georgia Sales and Use Tax Applicable to Registration

The rate of sales and use tax ranges from 4% to 7% of the purchase price or rental charge, less trade-in allowance. Tax rates vary among counties because of the Local Option Tax, Special County Tax, Educational Tax, and MARTA tax. Credit for like taxes paid in another state is allowed on a reciprocal basis. Non-residents purchasing motor vehicles in Georgia may be exempt when completing a Certificate of Exemption, Form ST-8, and immediately transporting and using the vehicle in the state of residence. Dealers are responsible for the collection of the tax from the purchaser. For additional information contact the Sales and Use Division, 1800 Century Center Blvd. NE, Suite 8304, Atlanta, Georgia 30345
