Florida Sales and Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

Sales tax rate is 6% on straight sales (no trade). 6% on cash difference paid on TRADE, new and used. A 1% to 1.5% additional local option tax up to $5,000.00 in valuation may also be required depending on the county the applicant resides in. MILITARY PERSONNEL who are residents of another state and who are stationed in Florida are exempt from sales and use taxes if the out-of-state registration is maintained. Vehicles purchased for use and registered in Florida by such military personnel are subject to taxation. CREDIT ALLOWED for sales or use taxes paid in reciprocal states, which are all states, except: AK, DC, HI, KY, MD, MT, NH, OR, WV. NEW RESIDENT EXEMPT if vehicle purchased in another state six months prior to residing in Florida. NON-RESIDENT must pay Florida sales tax, not to exceed 6%, when vehicle purchased is to be titled in resident’s home state. Taxes are paid to dealer if purchased from dealer, Tax Collector if individual sale. When customer receives more than one vehicle in an even trade, and no money changes hands, trade downs are exempt from sales tax. Customer must specify sales tax information on form HSMV 82040.
