Information from NADA Title & Registration Textbook 2004

 

Connecticut Sales and Use Tax Applicable to Registration

 

6% on the book value. Personal property tax is levied by the town where the vehicle is garaged. SALES AND USE TAXES 6% on July 1, 1989 on BOOK VALUE less amount allowed for TRADE-IN vehicle if purchased from a licensed dealer. CREDIT is allowed for sales or use taxes paid to another state. NON-RESIDENT exempt if the vehicle is to be registered in the state of residence. Taxes are paid to the DMV on private sales or sales by an out-of-state dealer. On sales by a Connecticut licensed dealer, the dealer collects the sales tax. No taxes due on an even trade even if more than one vehicle is traded in.
