I'm curious. For those who refuse to show ID when making a credit card transaction, how often are you refused the purchase? How often are you allowed to make the purchase, anyway? Do they give you grief over it? Do you end up talking with the manager?

Keep in mind that I'm not really looking for a debate on the merits pro or con, as that's covered in other threads, just curious about other's experiences.

Used to work for Hollywood Video -- We were told my district managers/Loss prevention to ID if someone uses a card.. I'm sorry, I know GEORGE's thinking but I would refuse him.. Honestly, *I* could careless if he calls Visa.. You know why, cause I will NEVER hear about it. No higherup will mention it to me, because they tell me to ID (supposedly it's in our handbook).

I've only been asked for ID three times in the past year.

All three of those times, it's been because I was using a store card (Target, Foley's, etc) for the first time.

Whats the big deal about showing ID? It takes about 15 secs of your time to do so. What if somebody stole your CC and went on a shopping spree with it and nobody ever asked that person for ID? I think then that these people that complain about showing ID would probably then complain why ID wasn't shown. People just make it a big deal so they have an excuse to be buttholes about something. :dntknw:

I'm NEVER asked here in Austin. Happened all over town in Lubbock the other day, but we were in a huge rush trying to make a wedding on time so I didn't have time to scream at anyone but I did point out that it was against their merchant agreement and I was protesting it. The little girl at the desk just got all confused and I really couldn't take time to pursue it. And that was only once with my card. The Frys electronics near where I live has quit asking for IDs since I was here last summer and the issue hasn't come up anywhere else since I started the Requirement to show ID thread. No place in Austin checks IDs in my experience. Every place in Lubbock does. Maybe the salamander police department there is encouraging it, I dunno. I think my policy on it will be to go ahead and make a purchase, but make sure they've been informed and that they won't do it without an ID and then call Visa/MC and the issuing bank afterward. Well actually now that I think about it there was ONE place in Austin that asks, but I wasn't the one making a purchase. Small overpriced hobby shop.

I live in the same city as you -- And Fry's DOES check IDS!... EVERYTIME I go they check -- Maybe you've gottin someone who didn't care. FYI Target & Malls a lot of times check ids.. ESPICALLY in Christmas time, I got checked EVERYWHERE in the mall.

We live in Washington (state) and the only times I can recall being asked for a picture ID is when I use one of my cc's on the military base. It's frightening to me to think about how infrequently I'm asked to show a picture ID. Also, I've noticed that NOBODY really ever checks to see that my card is signed and compare sigs.....another frightening issue :dntknw:

What really sucks is when two people ahead of you use their card and no sig is checked or ID. THen when its your turn, your carded and they go over it with a fine tooth comb.

The average cashier would fear getting fired for not checking ID, if management told them to, far more than they'd fear VISA's policies.

I live near Sacramento and have noticed that I get asked for ID more often than not anymore, and it seems to have really caught on around here in the last year, or so. I do find it ironic at Wal-Mart that I will get checked at the regular check-outs, but no one will ever care if I pay by credit card at the self-service check-outs.

No one ever asks me, in most cases.

The only time I was asked for ID recently was when I had a stereo installed in my car. I am pretty sure they would not have asked if I would have bought the stereo and installed it myself, though. I'm not sure why that is the policy but it did involve them driving my car into their garage and such.

I 100% agree... A cashier could careless about VISA's policy on ID. There boss tells them to check ID, they will. And trust me, if you do complain to VISA -- And they DO something the cashier will never hear about it..

Frys may be based upon dollar amount...I was in three times in the past week with none of the purchases exceeding $500 and two of them not exceeding $200. Their door nazis lemonade me off though...I tend to just walk past them- if they want to try and detain me, I'll see them in court.

Being asked for ID at the register doesn't bother me, but I've been victimized in two separate episodes of ID theft (including one that neared a total of $200K). I dare say that people like George would change their tune if they ever had to clean up the damage inflicted by ID theft...

My feelings exactly. I will not tolerate being treated like a criminal.

Walmart does it for me every time too. A few other places have because my cards aren't signed.. In fact, I'd prefer they do. If I ever lost my cards I'd sure want them to ask for i.d. if someone was using them.

I never sign credit or debit cards. I've gotten questions because of that but never a refusal.
