First post, I got a few questions:

This thread has been around for about 3 years...and I read in the earlier stages of this thread that the quickest way to get a DUNS number is to go to ccr.gov.

I read later in the thread that some people registered there, and were told that their account would be disabled if they didn't apply for some goverment thing within 30 days.

My question is this: Is ccr.gov still the quickest way to get a DUNS? If so, is the 30 day thing true? Will they really disable your DUNS? If this is indeed the best way to do it, and they don't cancel...here is my next question: Where EXACTLY do I go on that ccr.gov website? Is this what I do:

1) Click START A NEW REGISTRATION
2) Click for expanded details under item 1 (DUNS number)
3) Click the link on letter b which links me to this site: http://fedgov.dnb.co...playHomePage.do
4) From there do I select "Click here to request your DUNS via the Web" ???

After that of course I have to fill out the forms...but is this the correct process?

Also, do I have to complete items 2-4 on ccr.gov new registration (2- TIN, 3- Statistical info about your business, 4- EFT)???
OR
Do I just finish the forms on the DNB page (Request your DUNS via the Web) and forget about ccr.gov at that point?

Someone please help me. Thanks.

You do not have to register with CCR and your number will remain valid. Last Year I got my number within one day as a government contractor and I never register with CCR.

Thanks. So to put it simple:

http://fedgov.dnb.co...playHomePage.do

Go there and register. And forget about ccr.gov.

Is that correct?

Hi, all. I'm new to the forum.

Anyone ever heard or used a company called The BizCredit to get business credit established on clients behalf? They say they apply for DUNS number and create paypex by getting you net 30 accounts.

Basically they are selling you the same stuff you can do yourself. eg, I incorp my LLC on the state's website - I had a company that would have done the same for me for $150 - save yourself the trouble and just go through the steps on this website and save your money

Information Overload on this topic.

Here's my question. Much is said about the specifics of obtaining a DB #. What I mean by that is some say to make sure you have a phone that is not your personal, and that you can't use your home address etc...

Well, my business is out of my home, part time, and I use my personal cell. Is this as big of a deal as some say it is?

I didn't obtain my DB # yet because the first page asks for an address...and i wasn't sure wether to put my home(where i do business) or my PO Box? If I use my home, can I change it when I move?

Thanks.

It gets so confusing. I've been doing a ton of research and it seems that there aren't too many places that give you all the information you need to build business credit in one handy-dandy format. There are alot of businesses out there that will charge you to set up your DUNS and build your credit profile over the course of several months, and many of them "can get you" a line of credit with one of their "preferred venders" or with a special credit card.

Anyway - what I've come up with from my research is:
1) Choose the name your business - make sure it is unique and not already in use by another corporation or company.
2) Choose your business entity – determine if the best structure for your business is a Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLC, or Partnership.
3) Determine your corporate mailing address – if you work from your home, you may want to use a different address.
4) Get your EIN – this in imperative to separating personal from business credit.
5) Open a business bank account – again, you must separate your personal and business financial information.
6) List your business phone number with the search directories – your customers, potential lenders, vendors and the Credit Reporting Agencies must be able to find you.
7) Get your domain name, website, and email - these are as important as a phone number and mailing address.
8) Make sure all business accounts reference the exact same name and address – avoid confusion for your customers, potential lenders, vendors and the Credit Reporting Agencies.
9) Apply for credit with one net-30 vendor every month or so – take it easy and don’t go on application spree.
10) Pay your credit lines on time or early – prove that you are reliable and deserve MORE credit!
11) After you have 5-6 vendors reporting good payments, check with DnB to determine your D-U-N-S number and PAYDEX – your credit score with DnB will be a huge factor in developing your business credit reputation with venders and lenders.
12) Continue to apply for net-30 terms, but only 1-2 per month – applying for a lot of credit in a short period of time sends a red flag to the CRAs.
13) Begin applying for business credit cards – compare the rates and benefits.
14) Regularly monitor your credit profile with DnB, Experian, and Equifax – check your profile every month or so. Make any corrections or disputes immediately.

Anybody got more ideas? Always interesed in more info...

Unfortunately this posting just adds to any "confusion."

I would advise anyone reading this post to continue to read through the forum for more information and how to's etc.

Thanks for trying though......

Hi, I am new to this board and have a question on how do you get vendors to report to your d&b credit builder. I have a business since 2005 and have a d&b number and password. Because of the nature of my business everything we buy is pre-paid, we don't have a credit line with any of the companies (at least not formal) sometimes they postpone our checks a day or two. We also, sometimes, buy from retailers like best buy and on-line at buy.com...Now we would like to build a credit history to be able to request credit or just to get an account with some vendors, but we are not quite sure how...any suggestions are welcome...thanks!

I used this method a while back to obtain a DUNS #. I did not follow-through on the CCR process and the DUNS number they issued me was indeed canceled. So, YMMV.

Your corp is over 2 years old so that helps. Plus you have a DnB. Check your profile with DnB's eUpdate to make sure everything is ok. Since you have a good relationship with your vendors, talk to their accounting department to see if they'll offer you net30 and report to the CRAs or find some other vendor that will. If you are willing to do a PG you should be able to get a credit card or store/merchant card.

Hi everyone. I am a Newbie here and I have been in business and fully incorporated since 2006. I talked with DnB today to verify if I have a DUNS #. I started building my business credit last year and applied to Staples and received instant credit w/o a PG. Now, DnB provided me with my company's Duns# over the phone. However, I was told that although my company is visible via a search on their website, my company has not yet been validated which is necessary to obtain further credit. I was also informed that I can only get my business validated by paying $329.00 for them to fully validate my business through their verification process. Does this sound possible? I applied for creit at another company and I was told that although my company's name is present on Experian/Equifax, I have no score. Can someone please advise me on this $329.00 validation from DnB and what other steps I need to take. Thanks in Advane.

D&B will tell you anything to get you to pay for something. If your company is on the website, creditors will report your info to D&B based on your DUNS

I have a couple questions.

I just recently signed up at D&B and am trying to get myself familiar with how it works.

1) How does D&B establish Business Credit without your EIN number? Is there a place I am supposed to update that too?

2) For the referals, do they have to be vendors/suppliers with Dun numbers?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just called D&B and got a Duns number. I told them that I needed a number because I'm applying for government grants. They gave me a number with no issues. Here is my next question:

They said I have to register with CCR.gov within 30 days or my DUNS # will be invalid. I have previously asked this question, but now I will go in further detail.

I understand that they may or may not disable the number. I want to be safe. I am not at all familiar with CCR.gov and what it's about. I understand that the reason we tell D&B that we are applying for a govt. grant is so we can get the Duns # immediately. Now can I go on CCR.gov and follow through on that process to make sure my Duns doesn't get voided? Or does CCR.gov not apply to me because that was a "wolf" to get my number quicker in the first place?

It will still be valid - you don't need to register

Thanks this D&B 101 was very informative. I recently went thru the same thing. I was approved for a Staples 2000CL(which is weird bcuz lots of ppl say they were appr w/ a 750 CL startig out) but can't seem to be approved for any other cards? I've been in busines for about 18 months, I have a biz checking, a Sprint biz account with up to 30 lines, a office depot line of credit for 1000 that a sales rep came to my office and established, which is weird bcuz i dont have a card, i can order things online at officedepot.com/bsd. Does anyone have any suggestions of some starter companies/vendors/suppliers that will approve me???? Denials so far: ExxonMobil,

Uline. Reports to D&B and EX. Also try BP and Citgo. ExxonMobil is backed by Citi.

Also, how long ago were the accounts issued? They might not have had enough time to report to D&B.

You may have to do battle with the phone rep, but yes. If you get an especially pushy rep, just hang up and try again. Also, you can say you need to check with your partner or someone. That usually slows them down.
