My sister served in the Army during Desert Storm. I always thought she was medically discharged. In conversation with her today it came up that she receives monthly pension payments. I asked how did she get a pension for a medical discharge?? She says she's medically retired. I think I may have an in with NFCU! But I don't understand how someone gets medically retired after serving 2 years active and 7 years reserve. She was injured while she was on active duty, went on to do 7 years reserves, now she's medically retired?? Has anyone ever heard of that? I just want to make sure I am not getting lost in terminology with her. After being discharged from the Army for such a long time, aside from retirement, is there is no other way for her to be getting monthly payments? Also, can someone be medically retired from the reserves?

Just checked, have yet another Uncle that did/put in 4 years, and received an HONORABLE discharge. Am I to understand that, since I have about 4 or 5 people in my family that meet the descriptor of Honorable discharge, that I continue to be NOT eligible for NCFU??? :(

How bout USAA...

OK I have sisters DD-14 it says:

Type of separation: Retirement

Character of service: Honorable

Narrative reason for separation: Physical Disability -Temporary

All these years and I never knew she was retired. I'm glad I didn't because I would have had a Navy card back when I filed BK7 and they would have been IIB.

Does this retirement status foot the bill?

She's an annuitant, that should qualify her.

You'd be doing her a favor by having her become a member.

Oh yeah, she'll appreciate it!

But if worse comes to worse I apply and produce DD214 on demand. How do I prove she's my sister though? They use lexus nexus?

Funny, I've been looking for an angle to get in with NFCU all these years and my sister was retired the whole time

Sister wrote me and surprised me with her access code, so no prodding necessary to get her to join :)

I signed up online... I'm now a member of NFCU!!! DW is next.

My brother served in Desert Storm also. Served 5 years and has an honorable discharge. He is also a annuitant. I'm not exactly sure why he gets a check every month, but he does. He called the other day and they told him that he does not qualify.

You should ask him what his DD-214 shows on the "type of separation" line. Does it say retired?

I don't know if that matters though. Their website clearly states "All Department of Defense (DoD) uniformed personnel—Army, Marine Corps, Navy and

Air Force retirees and annuitants"

I would guess that getting a monthly check makes him an annuitant?? I really don't know what annuitant entails for the armed services.

Bumping. I think my grandfather retired from the military, and I am not sure about my dh's grandfather as to whether he RETIRED. It seems to be the big issue - they had to have retired from the military for it to count. They wouldn't give us information over the phone, they told me it was a "back office" issue and that without having a DD-12 or DD-14, there was no way to prove anything, they will have to "research" it. So, I guess we will be checking with family members to try to find this information, and then go from there. Anyone know how long it takes if they have to "research" it?

same here , I joined over the phone . My dad is retired from the army but not a member. The woman that took my app over the phone asked how i was eligible . I told her about my dad and i have never had any other questions from them about it. I have a 20k CC with them a 35k car loan and they are my main bank. I have even opened up my son a savings account with them . Never any issues about me being eligible or not.

I am trying to join and have the same situation, did you have to give any of your dads info?? ie ss#,etc because I dont have that stuff..

What is a "Department of Defense" installation? My dad was an aerospace engineer for North American Aviation/Rockwell/Boeing working on projects contracted for NASA (Gemini/Apollo/shuttle). Is that DOD? He's retired now and receiving a pension. He's also an AF veteran but from what I'm gathering here that doesn't count as he only served four years.

And, I doubt he'd want to join for me.

Am I out of luck?

Unless he joins you're likely not eligible.

I would say it's not a DOD installation.. A DOD installation sounds to me like it would be a military base or say the Pentagon. Some place that falls under the Dept of Defense... And even if he did work at a DOD installation, if he didn't join, at that time, and he's no longer there, he probably doesn't qualify either... I don't think Nasa was ever considered DOD.

Navy isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'm in and passed a security review and seriously don't understand what the hype is. There are other credit unions that are just as good and are easier to get into.

When you get a XX,XXX CL, you'll know what all the hype is! good.gif

I did get approved for a card on my acceptance to NFCU

Congratulations! Based on your creditworthiness, you have been approved for a cashRewards Visa credit card. Your new credit line will be $25,000.00. Your APR will be prime plus 6.4%. You should receive your new card(s) in 7-10 normal mail delivery days.

But another credit unions would also easily give me that. Such as PSECU

Congrats, that's awesome! But PSECU cc MAX is 20K. NFCU MAX is 50K, and can go to 80K on Flagship...

I could PM you another credit union that is quite elite and will give you similar lines of credit.

If someone would also PM the name of this credit union to me it would be greatly appreciated!

My brother is currently a captain in the Army but is not a member of NFCU. About 4 weeks ago I called in to NFCU to confirm it is okay for me join even though he is currently not a member and was told I was okay to join. I offered to give his name and rank to the person over the phone but was told it wasn't needed and I also sent them a secured message the same day I set up the account offering the same and never received a response, I haven't applied for anything yet and don't plan to for atleast another month but I have to admit to being a bit paranoid that they are going to lock my account.

They *might* lock it for a few days, at the worst! But I doubt that very much... You are good to go IMO, and you should confidently app for product - if you want!! :good:

Welcome to the Family!

Apparently my screenshot on post #157 was removed... But let me reiterate that their online eligibility wizard states that "family members" (including siblings) are eligible for a membership. Basically, if you are related to someone who is eligible, you are eligible. If they are question your eligibility, you can show proof of your brother's Army relationship, and what they state on their eligibility wizard.
