WFTV also learned that Zimmerman has been the victim of violence at least twice in the past.

He was working security for a party at an Altamonte Springs home in 2005 and residents said someone broke his jaw when he tried to break up a fight.

That same year, he was robbed at gunpoint at a 7-Eleven after eating dinner at a nearby Chili's restaurant.

I have been careful to keep my mouth shut thus far but...but.. I believe I have commented in the past about the dangers of putting guns in the hands of people with "never again" mentalities.

Putting all other issues aside. If this guy who, clearly, was unfit to carry a weapon, had not been armed, he probably would have kept his butt in the car and none of this would have even been an issue.

<And just to try to defuse things, I'm not saying no one should be aloud to carry in public. I am saying that situations like this demonstrate that it is a responsibility that not everyone should really be trusted with. People who may go out looking for a fight, for instance, when they should have just let the police handle it..>

The severity of this case would not be any less if the watch captain knifed the kid to death. Lets not turn this into yet another who should be allowed to carry guns and when issue. The kid is dead because of the watch captain's actions. The gun is not responsible.

No Trevor, there are people who should not be able to own guns.

However, figuring that out is now almost impossible due to HIPAA.

And yes, guns DO kill. It is considerably easier (psychologically) to shoot someone than to stab someone. A gun is more....impersonal and a knife is very personal. If a person is bent on killing you....it is going to happen regardless of whether they have a knife or gun. But if the person is not bent on killing, a gun will increase the odds of death occurring. That is why I won't have one in my house. I am not concerned about myself or Echo, but there is someone here that has an anger management issue....so if one materializes here, it will be turned over to the police for disposal.

The Sanford neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, did not instigate the encounter, but has received death threats and moved out of his home, his father told the Orlando Sentinel today.

George Zimmerman, 28, has not been arrested, something that has put him and the Sanford Police Department at the center of a firestorm. Critics say Trayvon, who was visiting family from his home in Miami, was a victim of racial profiling.

Zimmerman's father, 64-year-old Robert Zimmerman of Lake Mary, delivered a one-page letter to the Sentinel today, saying that media portrayals of his son have been cruel and misleading.

George Zimmerman is Hispanic and has grown up in a multi-racial family, the statement says.

"The media portrayal of George as a racist could not be further from the truth," the letter says. "He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever."

The letter does not provide details about what happened that night, Feb. 26, on a walkway in the gated community where George Zimmerman lives and where Trayvon was visiting.

But it does challenge one basic assumption: that Zimmerman got out of his SUV to confront Trayvon after calling police to report a suspicious person.

"At no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin. When the true details of the event became public, and I hope that will be soon, " the letter said, "everyone should be outraged by the treatment of George Zimmerman in the media."

"Our entire family is deeply sorry for the loss of Trayvon," Robert Zimmerman's letter says. "We pray for the Martin family daily. We also pray that the community will grieve together and not be divided by more unwarranted hate."

What happened that night, the letter says was "tragic … and very sad for all concerned. The Martin family, our family and the entire community have been forever changed."

George Zimmerman has not talked publicly about what happened, his father said, because that's the advice police gave him.

Both Zimmerman families have moved out of their homes, at least temporarily, Robert Zimmerman said, because they've received death threats.

Statement of Robert Zimmerman in its entirety

"The tragic events of February 26 are very sad for all concerned. The Martin family, our family, and the entire community have been forever changed.

The portrayal of George Zimmerman in the media, as well as the series of events that lead to the tragic shooting are false and extremely misleading. Unfortunately, some individuals and organizations have used this tragedy to further their own causes and agendas.

George is a Spanish speaking minority with many black family members and friends. He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever. One black neighbor recently interviewed said she knew everything in the media was untrue and that she would trust George with her life. Another black neighbor said that George was the only one, black or white, who came and welcomed her to the community, offering any assistance he could provide. Recently, I met two black children George invited to a social event. I asked where they met George. They responded that he was their mentor. They said George visited them routinely, took them places, helped them, and taught them things and that they really loved George. The media portrayal of George as a racist could not be further from the truth.

The events of February 26 reported in the media are also totally inaccurate. Out of respect for the on-going investigation, I will not discuss specifics. However, the media reports of the events are imaginary at best. At no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin. When the true details of the event become public, and I hope that will be soon, everyone should be outraged by the treatment of George Zimmerman in the media.

Our entire family is deeply sorry for the loss of Trayvon. We pray for the Martin family daily. We also pray that the community will grieve together and not be divided by more unwarranted hate.

The Zimmerman family will have no further contact with the media prior to the resolution of the investigation. It would be greatly appreciated if the media would respect our privacy."

It's indisputable that George was at first safely inside his SUV, armed and mobile. Then 13 minutes of question marks later, he was outside on the sidewalk. Unless someone is willing to alledge that Mr. Martin dragged him out (and a good neighborhood watchman knows to keep the doors locked), George started the altercation.

I'm looking forward to that report going public. If he was in the car, and was advised to stay in the car, how did he end up down the block. I doubt that, being armed and all he was intimidated into unlocking his vehicle..

Three witnesses contacted by The Miami Herald say they saw or heard the moments before and after the Miami Gardens teenager’s killing. All three said they heard the last howl for help from a despondent boy, and believe the sequence of sounds shatters the notion that Trayvon was killed in self defense.

I heard someone crying – not boo-hoo crying, but scared or terrified or hurt maybe,” said Mary Cutcher, 31. “To me, it was a child.”

Watch captain George Zimmerman said he tailed Trayvon in a mission to find out if the teen was up to no good. Zimmerman was out to put a stop to recent burglaries. He dialed police – his 46th call in the past 14 months to report shady people, reckless drivers and other disturbances around his neighborhood.

He offered to follow his suspect, but the dispatcher told him: “We don’t need you to do that.”

But Zimmerman did anyway. Some minutes later, Trayvon was killed with a gun the watch volunteer was licensed to carry.

“This was not self defense,” Cutcher said. “We heard no fighting, no wrestling, no punching. We heard a boy crying. As soon as the shot went off, it stopped, which tells me it was the child crying. If it had been Zimmerman crying, it wouldn’t have stopped. If you’re hurting, you’re hurting.”

She and her friend say they heard the sounds from a few steps away, where they were inside beside an open window. Seconds later, they dashed out to find a boy face down on the ground and a man standing over him, a foot on each side of the body on the ground, with his hands pinning the shooting victim down.

“I asked him, ‘What’s happening here? What’s going on?’ said Cutcher’s friend, who did not want her name published for fear for her safety. “The third time, I was indignant, and he said, ‘just call the police.’ Then I saw him with his hands over his head in the universal sign of: ‘Oh man, I messed up.’”

The women, who were the first on the scene, said they saw Zimmerman pacing back and forth.

“I know what I heard. I heard a cry and a shot,” the second witness said. “If there was a fight, it did not happen here where the boy was shot. I would have heard it, as this all happened right outside my open window.”

A neighborhood eighth grader out walking his dog said his family also called 911.

“I saw someone lying on the ground, and I heard screaming,” said Austin, 13, whose mother asked that his last name not be published. “I don’t know that it was the person on the [ground] who was screaming, but to me it sounded like a kid who was crying. It was a yell for help, and I think it was Trayvon.”

Media is a bunch of pot stirrers. They reported the watch captain as white and the killed guy as black. Of course they stirring the pot, what was the relevance of reporting the race if not start siht?

Media sux anyways. They couldn't even get that right.

There shouldn't be a get out of jail card based on the father's statements above. Claiming to be a minority and non-white should not exempt one from the charge of racism. Welcome to equality.

I have no idea what happened. Who knows. I like the idea of a neighborhood patrol myself, but sure, some overzealous-nutso could do some damage, and should be held accountable if they made a unilateral decision to shoot someone because they suspected he might be a burglar of some sort. I have no idea if that is the case, I just don't have the facts. I think it is terrible for the family to be receiving death threats, and may well very well be due to an inaccurate pot stirring of the media, that they fear for their safety. Statements of vigilante justice have been made frowning on this issue, but it is not much different from calling and threatening the family without knowing all the facts.

This case is getting even stranger...

http://www.myfoxorlando.com/dpp/news/seminole_news/031612-witness-in-teen-shooting

This morning one of the witnesses to the shooting death of a 17-year-old in Sanford plans to speak to the media.

Mary Cutcher says she was there the night Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

Cutcher claims police officers on the scene initially ignored her but a spokesman from the Sanford Police departments tells a different story.

Sgt Dave Morgenstern says on the night of the shooting Cutcher told officers she did not want to get involved and that police contacted her later to get her statement. “She was contacted several times and on March 2nd she did finally come in for an interview here at the station.”

Cutcher says that's not true. “I contacted the PR guy for the Chief and told him exact dates and times I called, four different times for one person.”

Cutcher is threatening to sue if police don't retract their statement. Sanford Police say her testimony is consistent with what neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman said.

Cutcher will be holding a news conference at 9:30 a.m. with Martin's parents and their attorney.

WTF????? Now witnesses want to sue and hold press conferences???!!!!

Ah...the infamous "I can't be racist, some of my best friends are Black" defense. Naturally. Somebody should ask Zimmerman exactly what Trayvon was doing that was so suspicious, other than walking while Black with a bottle of Snapple and some Skittles. And who "they" are that "always get away with it", too. Yeah, let's hear those answers.

How did they get the race wrong? Hispanics come in all races. White, Black, Asian, Klingon...

Um...yeah.

If the shooter didn't follow the police as his father claims in the letter to the Orlando Sentinel, why did his son tell the police the following?

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/os-trayvon-martin-shooting-911-call-20120316,0,5950789.story

Zimmerman told police he got out of his SUV to follow Trayvon on foot, and the 17-year-old came toward him.

The two got into a fight, and Zimmerman wound up on the ground, he told police. Trayvon hit him in the face, and Zimmerman yelled for help.

This police chief has some interesting definitions of the concepts of "probable cause" and "civil rights" that don't mesh with what the concepts really mean. Maybe he thinks that throwing some big words around for justification will convince people he's doing the right thing.

One of the witnesses to the shooting also spoke to the media on Friday. Mary Cutcher says she was there the night of the shooting and does not believe Zimmerman was acting in self-defense.

“We were in the kitchen. I heard the crying. It was a little boy. As soon as the gun went off the crying stopped therefore it tells me it was not Zimmerman crying," she said. "Immediately, we went out the sliding glass door and see Zimmerman over the body with his hands on the body.“

Cutcher said she first thought Zimmerman was applying CPR and putting pressure on Martin's wounds. "Until later, when we realized he came off the body. We realized the boy was face down, his face was in the grass and his body was not in an upright position. He was shot in the chest and he was face down; therefore, he was not helping the kid.”

Earlier this week, the Sanford Police Department turned the investigation over to the State Attorney's Office which, in turn, has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to review evidence in the shooting.

So basically:1) he followed the boy, 2) got out of his car, 3) they got into a fight, 4) Zimmerman started getting his flowers kicked so 5) he pulled out his gun & shot him. Got it.

This is exactly why I'm going into law. So I can work my way up to the top and get these raging wireless routers exactly where they belong. I can't believe things like this happen anymore. Whenever I read of "sundown towns" or whatever...I just can't believe it. It's disgusting. People like that have no use in this world.

Two people. Two. Have implied that this jackass not having a gun would have made no difference.

Anyone who think's a knife makes them in control of a situation is an salamander. Anyone. A knife is a weapon of desperation. Your last defense. It sure as hell doesn't "empower you". Seriously people. Go watch the movie "Kick flowers" or something. You people are not living in the real world. Not only for personal safety and social good, but under the law, confrontation and gunplay must be avoided until as a matter of last possible recourse. THE ONLY THING ZIMMERMAN HAD TO DO TO AVOID THE SHOOTING WAS TO STAY IN HIS FREAKING CAR!

The fact is simple. This murder would not have taken place if the murderer, Zimmerman, had not been armed with a firearm. Just like most cowards who commit violent crime, Zimmerman hid behind his gun when things got hot. Zimmerman wanted to play vigilante. And now an innocent child is dead because of his disregard for human life in his pursuit of fame and recognition.

But no! Lets take the other point of view here. Everyone is big and bad about gun carrying. What if Trayvon had been carrying? What if he shot back to defend him self against the violent attacker! Instead of questions about self defense, it would have read "Black male shooter arrested in gated community after confrontation and shoot out; leaving Neighborhood Watch leader Zimmerman dead, currently being held without bail". Don't even pretend it isn't true.

The understanding I got is that Trayvon was facing Zimmerman at the time of the shooting, and was shot in center mass, the implication then is that he was either spun by the impact, or that he was trying to crawl away. Another possibility is that Zimmerman rolled the child onto his belly before kneeling over him, possibly trying to "subdue" him, not realizing he was already dead. But I do believe that it was a front facing, not rear facing injury.

My opinions and some facts on this:

1. Someone who calls the cops 46 times in 14 months of being a Neighborhood Watch person in a gated community has issues. From the articles I have read, 30% of the community was not white. This guy is a freak. I don't give a crap about Daddy's statement. he is a freak. The cops should realize this. If they didn't after the first 10 calls....

2. I believe this freak may have tried to get into LE at some point and was turned down. I bet it was because of the Psych exam. I don't know how many people go into Criminal Justice to not do something with LE. Again, my opinion.

3. All of these witnesses can NOT be lying. I don't care what the police say.

4. There was NO reason for this wanna be to even get out of his vehicle. His statement about "them getting away" clearly says to me that he has some sort of judgment being formed on this kid anyway.

5. This kid was shot 70 feet from his home or door. I can't remember how they worded it. This kid had already been followed for God knows how long and this salamander did not let up.. See #4.

6. I don't know how anyone can NOT think that is a child's voice on those tapes. It broke my heart hearing them so for his parents to hear that....Oh my gosh....

7. I also thought I read where Wanna Be was not even supposed to be doing NHW anymore. (neighborhood watch) I thought I read an article that the HOA or whomever had told him to stop because he was TOO AGGRESSIVE.

I hope that peoples' heads start to roll and this family gets justice for this. I don't blame the kid if he did at one point turn around and ask the guy what he wanted. I would NOT like someone following me. Who knows if this guy was talking smack to him, too?

As for self defense... could have sworn in my Criminal Justice classes, we learned that bringing a gun to a fist fight was not self defense UNLESS the other guy had hands that were considered a deadly weapon. I think he CLEARLY shot this kid because he was losing or embarrassed he got a bloody nose. IF this kid even did that. Why not leave the gun in the car? Why not stay in the car?????? :aggressive:

This.

Underlined part: I wonder if he was on top of the boy making sure he was dead by smothering him. This would make it so he couldn't talk. I know that sounds harsh and I almost didn't type it but...

Btw, I love how the dad says that Wanna Be isn't talking because that is what the police advised. Really? NOW he is listening to the police? Shoulda listened to them before when they told him to NOT get out of the car and to STOP following the 17 yo. I think he is worried about tripping on his own words...

All I believe about Zimmerman is that he is a murderer...

I really don't want to go there...it would cook my grits. I never know the police to tell anyone to stop talking, in fact rather the opposite..
