I challenged people who think showing ID is okay to scan the front and back of their driver's license, and post them here. No one ever did it.

Not the same thing. Letting someone look at your card to verify name is much different than making all your information public on the internet. A poster on this topic on the Consumerist site was a bank employee involved in credit cards. He said that only once was an employee ever involved in fraudulent card use, it was always misuse of the actual card. In this one case it was the card info only, there was no license info involved.

You are taking something that almost never happens and blowing this possibility way out of proportion. If you are worried about this, you should be worried about many more things. You are far more likely to die in a plane crash, get hit by lighting in your own house, and on the positive side win 50K in the lottery. You are hanging your hat on that because it is theoretically possible, or has happened once or twice(I have never heard of it happening), it is likely to happen? There just are so many other much more likely ways for your personal information to be compromised.

It would be fairly difficult for someone to actually remember what was needed to cause any damage. My license has my address and date of birth., height and weight. My address is public info, the only real concern would be date of birth, there are many places that know my date of birth.

One thing to think about: apparently thieves do not find that information particularity valuable. They do fine with just the credit card info, they don't spend the effort for things that don't help them, and so they don't. If they are interested, the internet is the best and easiest source. That is why I will not post my info on the internet, but if someone asks for my ID I will let them see. It has never been a problem, but if it ever is I will let you know.

Yeah, a bank employee can always be expected to tell the truth regarding fraud statistics. Identity theft is rising by day and there have been several stories posted on this board alone about how people have been stalked by people who obtained addresses from ID's shown during credit card use.

It has happened and is much more common that you think.

Just because it is difficult for you doesn't mean it is difficult for others. My address, for example has just a number and street with the name of a (fairly large)city. Not very difficult for someone who is trained to steal.

Here is my story. I was in NY a couple of months ago. On my last day there I visited a old school Italian restaurant bar in Manhattan - the bartender took my card and disappeared behind the bar and came back a minute or so later and placed my card on the cash register as usual. I wasn't worried since it was just the credit card and he hadn't carded me. Anyways, as luck would have had it, I got a call from Penfed just as I was leaving NY telling me that my card was hacked and a whole bunch of purchases were attempted, but none went through due to security warnings going off - and they said they were sending me a new card. A few days later I got a letter from the fraud division of First Data asking me to verify all the attempted purchases and identify the correct ones from the fraudulent. And I saw a whole bunch of completed charges from online merchants, plus a whole bunch of other $1 charges from NY metro. I called the number on the letter and was later called back by a fraud specialist who told me that stuff had been ordered but they were able to cancel the orders as they detected the fraud right away. So I was was wondering how they got my address without carding me - and then it struck me, the SOB bartender carded my wife!!

Anyways, Penfed was pretty good about canceling my charges - the only headache was that I couldn't view my card details for a couple of weeks.

It's hilarious that that one guy said hege was using a straw man argument when hege was really just pointing out the ad hominem logical fallacy in that poster's own argument.

Also, I have given up arguing with cashiers over ID. Now I just show my work ID. For age related ID, Passport card FTW!

That I'm never comfortable with. I don't like them taken out of my sight.

Yeah, also not the same thing as what normally happens. Normally they take a quick look to verify name, it takes a second would be difficult to memorize any info. Just make sure they don't get a pen out!

Yes, but what could I do? I didn't expect the guy to take off. I didn't think much about it at that time because it was a cool place, live music going on and I had been walking all day and was exhausted. It never occurred to me that the SOB would get my address from wife's ID.

I wonder if these pro_ID people would let a waiter take their card AND ID away from the table to process transactions?

It has never come up, but from reading about what happened to LBCS, I guess I would not like it one bit. They can verify my ID at the table! I have never had a restaurant even ask for ID for credit card identification though. In the rare instance I am carded it is just a quick look at my license, it is never taken anywhere.

I would not show ID. They can either take the credit card or not be paid.

I have no problem showing my ID. I've done it plenty of times... however I will not allow my ID to be taken out of my site. If they started to walk off with it, etc... I would politely interrupt them and ask that my ID not be removed from my presence.

I don't either to those who are required to see it. Ex: Buying alcohol, guns&ammo, clubs, etc as the merchant is legally required to see it to prevent selling to underage. But, merchant requiring ID for a regaulr sale is clearly doing so for their own uses...whatever they may be...and which is against their cc policy.
