that would probably draw you a trespass warning and possible arrest if you did that. as far as such stupidity walmart routinely does it here in the redneck riviera so maybe you should report them to bentonville since they are endangering their merchant agreement.

Last I knew this was a free country

No LAW says ID required to make a credit card purchase

FEDERAL or STATE (assuming you are not talking about booze or cancer sticks)

free country doesnt apply to private property and if they dont want you there you have to leave.

Well, I've made my point here. I thought perhaps if I gave you guys MY perspective as BEING a cashier and WHY it really is pointless to be so adamant about your oh so important "right" not to show an ID, you'd be like, "OOOOOH, so THAT'S why they do it... they DON'T hate our guts and try to annoy us!" But no. Obviously, just like so many other stupid CUSTOMERS, you just keep being condescending and acting like people who would like to be checked for ID and add "see ID" on their card (even if it's signed) as a SECURITY MEASURE are just stupid. Oooooh, how stupid of them...wanting to be safe from other people using their credit card, and stuff... I mean hey, it's just MONEY, why should THEY care if it gets stolen, right? :D

So since obviously pointing this stuff out hasn't made any difference, and I'm a "bad apple" because I'm one of the cashiers who asks for ID (and gets thanked for asking many many times a day), I'll just leave it alone. Just completely ignore the fact that cashiers are darned if they do and darned if they don't. They are a "bad apple" either way. Because we don't ID, we get chewed for it, and apparently now, if we do, we still get chewed. Go ahead, walk all over the cashier. And continue to think that the cashier is a racist, biased, jerkface who is out to get you and completely is TRYING to annoy the heck out of you. Surely THAT is why they ID you. In fact, feel free to be like those customers who sigh heavily and click their fingernails because you're "taking too long" when you're between shifts and have NO other cashiers to help you out and the person you're helping has a cart ful of things, is taking her own sweet time asking you every question under the sun and you're NOT allowed to cut her off, AND decides to pay with a freaking CHECK to top it off. Go ahead, be the customers behind her, sighing heaviliy and glaring at the cashier because obviously if it takes any time at all to move a line, it is AUTOMATICALLY the CASHIER'S fault for "going slow." Why? Because it's ALWAYS the cashier's fault. Not like that cashier is feeling the PRESSURE of having a line several people long. Not like that cashier feels the adrenaline of having so many glaring eyes fixed on him/her. Nope... Nothing like that. The cashier just hates you and wants to hold you up and prevent you from leaving because the cashier is a "bad apple." Just continue to think that....because you obviously cannot listen to reason.

Death to cashiers!!!!!

Ugh. Later.

ID requirements do absolutely nothing to protect the customer. Anyone with a stolen credit card can just use it at the vast majority of businesses that abide by their contract and don't require it. It would not take long to max out a card. Therefore, a store requiring ID has not protected the customer and the whole notion of "thanking" the cashier for this is absurd.

Firefly, GEORGE is so glad to meet you - he hasn't had anyone engage with him so earnestly for a long time. And everyone one else is glad you're here too. You're great! Even though I disagree with you, I do see your point from a cashier's perspective, and your posts were really thoughtful and amusing to read.

In reply to your observations I would make the points that:

1) Fake ID's are easy to make and a determined thief will not be held back by that requirement.

2) If it's not a universal requirement to show ID, it then becomes mostly a waste of time.

3) In one of your posts you seem to conflate credit card fraud with identity theft. They're not the same. You can't really have your identity stolen or your bank account wiped out just from an unauthorized user of your credit card.

4) I believe people who write CID on the back of their card have been persuaded by an urban legend that probably is not that helpful and that research has shown to not be that effective.

5) I can't quote that research but I do believe that this matter has probably not escaped the attention of the credit card companies and that they and their lawyers have thought long and hard about the best way to accept CC's.

6) People get exercised about this issue not as a way to give sales personnel a hard time but because they feel that using driver's license or any ID for something as trivial as shopping sets a dangerous precedent for thoughtlessly giving up privacy.

"Now, the way I was trained, is that a card is not signed, I have to ask for ID. If the card SAYS "SEE ID", I have to ask for ID. If the card is signed AND says "see ID," I STILL have to ask for ID. If a card is signed and does not say CID, I cannot ask."

You were trained correctly. You wouldn't have trouble with most of us here, George included, unless you asked for ID with a signed card. Our issue on this board is merchants that refuse to accept signed credit cards unless we show ID. This, as you clearly know, is a violation of the card company policies.

As for those folks with unsigned cards who get upset with the ID request, they need to sign their card (or request a new one if they've destroyed it with, "See ID").

You also need to be suspect of those customers who voluntarily hand you card and ID, especially for unusually large purchases. Sometimes the customer who seems the most honest, is actually a crook... Credit card thieves prepare well and will obtain Fake ID.

Agreed with George on this topic. Over the many years I have only seen the transaction handled correctly a few times at an Old Navy store. This is done in a series of steps.

1. Take card and swipe for authorization. HOLD card (many give it back).

2. Have customer sign slip.

3. Match signatures, from slip and back of card.

4. If match, THEN give back card and receipt.

SIMPLE

If a card has a blank signature, then you must ask for Identification and if name matches, have sign in your presence. If a card is unsigned it is not valid.

If a card has "CID" or "See ID" in the signature area, the card is void.

If a card has both signature and CID or See ID, then all that is needed is to match signatures like above.

On a side note I used to manage a major hotel, which you would all know by brand. I told crew to only take identification on CASH paying customers (In the event of vandalizing or theft). A night crew girl was unaware of this, and had been asking ID on credit cards as well for weeks. Apparently she rubbed the wrong person wrong, because out hotel was reported and I received a nice letter (from merchant processor). As a manager, I was like BS until I was told that the new night audit girl had been doing this. I immediately had to retrain staff, and informed them that if anyone did this again they would be terminated on the spot. THIS WAS BECAUSE IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO RUN A 340 ROOM HOTEL ONLY ACCEPTING CASH!
