Yikes!

It was a Walgreens in Rockford, Illinois, too....

scary as i too am in rockford.

I don't mind that we don't sign as most cashiers. 6.50-7$ job don;t look at the signature anyway. Just glance incase their boss is watching. I know years back when i worked retail their were times people would pay back in my electornics department. I looked at cards but only to see if people signed what looked ot be the same name as imprinted on the card.

In my gambling life i used to see a lot of men try to get a cash advance of their "wife, GF, mothers" card only the card only had the female's name so we wouldn't give them the cash. They could have been listed as an AU on the acct but I ain't handing over $1500 to someone off a card that ain't thiers.

never knew I had so many neighbors here...*grin* I'm about a half hour from Rockford...

but the cashiers SHOULD be checking the signatures...that's part of their job...

Slightly OT, but the Walgreens on Michigan Ave in Chicago, well...sucks.

Anyways, as long as I've lived here (4+ years) and (very reluctantly) shopped there, I swipe, get my receipt and leave. No one's ever asked or checked or anything.

I get asked all the time for my DL. When I was getting a tire changed the other day, the guy wrote down my DL #. I was a little shocked and told him that they're not allowed to do that because of id theft but he kept writing. I've done business with them for years and didn't want to pitch a fit.

If you're worried about id theft, there is more danger when someone has your id and cc info, then just cc info. I'm not worried someone's going to go crazy racking up burger charges and Wendy's and gum at Walgreens. I am sure they have risk models for small charges. Think like a criminal--would you risk a charge under $10, $20, or $50 on a stolen card?

I have "PLEASE ASK FOR ID" written on all my cards where my signature is supposed to be. In 2.5 years, I've been asked a total of three times for my ID. Sad.

It's a violatuion of the credit card agreements to ask for supplemental ID at the time of transaction. The card itself is all the ID required and allowed.

You yourself are in violation of your agreement with the card company by not signing the card.

This topic has been oft discussed on these boards.

How many cashiers and waitresses know the policy set out in CC agreements? I would rather have to explain to my CC issuer as to why I didn't sign the card than have to worry about a lost card. I've never seen the policy you mention in my CC agreements, either, but I'll check again. Of course, since nobody asks for my ID, it's really a moot point anyway, and I might as well sign my cards since nobody looks anyway. I could sign my receipts with "Batman" or "Max Powers" and I bet no one would notice.

I have a friend who used to sign all of his credit card receipts with "Mickey Mouse". He said in all the years he had been doing it only 2 people had ever even noticed...

:yahoo:

Hilarious site about signing receipts.  Might be fake, but you never know.

The Credit Card Prank.

http://www.zug.com/pranks/credit/

 Bwahahahahah !

I couldn't stop laughing! That was FUNNY!

I didn't go there per your post, I found it just by coincidence and then did a search if it had been talked about here so as not to generate a needless post about something that has already been talked bout.

Yes, you should thank me.

I have a pet peeve with the gas stations accepting "credit" at the pump without any kind of verification. I lost my "visa check card" on day and before I noticed it was gone, I had over $150 debited from one gas station. It was during Arizona's big gas crisis so I assume the scum filled up his friend's tanks with MY CARD!! Thankfully BofA refunded all the money back but still ... think about it. How often do you pay at the pump and all you have to do is slide your card, select credit and that's it. Some places ask for a zip code but most don't.

I ONLY USE PAY-AT-THE-PUMP

I HAVE NO USE FOR "INSIDE" PAY

(except when the pump card readers FREEZE)

Applause for that website- It was truly comical!

I err to the side of caution and applaud the original composer of this thread. Some valid points were made, and some rather erroneous ones were as well.

1: Nobody checks signatures: False: - Post office does, Any state/federal agency will when paying via credit card .

2: Most folks will go for conveninece rather then security when it comes to credit card transactions: True..:( Thiefs are betting on that mindset!

3:Placing "See ID" on a credit card isnt going to terminate ones account- Placing "This is a Hold UP!" might get ya some time in jail though!

Know how many times I've paid with my boss's card ("here, you girls go have lunch on me") or my husband's, and no one has batted an eye??

In that case, the boss has given you authority to use the card.

Some merchants could refuse, though... as you aren't the person who's name is on the card and it is not in writing.

Unless it's a company card I don't see why ANYONE would accept it (I know it happens, in fact I've been guilty of giving fi my debit card and he knows the pin, or let him go get gas for our car on my WalMart CC--pay at the pump)...But if you have to sign, then whether permission's been granted or not, only the person who has the name on the account can *legally* make purchases. That boss could *just as easily* go charge back that amount after they finished eating because he didn't make the purchase.

Now, I *really* don't know how company cc's work. I had to make purchases on a cc for my last job a couple of times...It had my boss's boss's name on it, but I had to fill out so much paperwork at the store anyway (tax-exempt info, and sign stuff saying I was authorized to use it), PLUS, I had to turn in all receipts after purchase (Had to get preapproval for items to be purchased anyway, so I'm sure they wouldn't accept me getting food while I was out getting other stuff, not that I would do that anyway).

Read your cardissuer agreement.

It says that if you give your card to someone else and they make purchases, or you tell them they can use it... then you can be held responsible for the charges.

But how can the person trying to make the purchase *prove* they have permission (and didn't actually steal the card)..or how can the merchant *prove* there was authorization if a customer wants to be a jerk and charge it back because he got mad at his buddy he lent the card to?

I always have to sign the receipt but it's rare that anyone ever compares my signature to the sig on my card.

I remember years ago when I worked at Target, some woman was using her mothers credit card. I told her we couldn't accept that, she pitched a fit and I called my supervisor over. This woman couldn't believe we were questioning it since she did this all the time. Well, she didn't get away with it that time!

And what's the deal with charging 25 cents if I use my debit card pin # and then am not required to sign? What fool pays 25 cents not to sign his own name??

Posted

There is no prohibition against fees for the debit card networks (they are like Maestro, NYCE, Interlink... not Visa/MC/Amex)

Also the 25 cent fee could be from your bank not the store!

I went to Walgreen's to pick up a prescription yesterday.

I paid with my Visa card....I gave her the card and she handed it back to me, with the Prescription and the receipt. I asked her why I didn't have to sign anything....she said purchases under $50 didn't need a signature...

Curious, I asked her how she knew I am ME, then....I pointed out that ANYONE then could use a card to purchase things in my name if a signature wasnt required. She became indignant and said I could sign the receipt, if I wanted to.

Keep in mind I already had the card in my wallet. I signed the receipt. I then asked her how she could verify my signature as she was no longer holding the card. Also, my card doesnt have my photo on it so why wouldnt she ask for any picture ID.

This is why Identity theft could be so easy, I think....or am I just being nit-picky here?

Anyone?

<_< Ohhh OK... I tought you where going to say "HIGHER PRICES".

That's what I have noticed.
