Nos, after reporting it to his supervisor (not the police, really?) and learning of it ongoing or learning of no action did he then carry forward and report it over and over until something was done? No.

He may not have been legally obligated to do so, but what human wouldn't? He let the welfare of children take second seat to the welfare of his football program. No one will convince me otherwise. I am sure he thinks he did the best, but I would hope if it was his grandchild he would have someone do more.

The allegations against surrounding this story are sick and incomprehensible. I don't understand how ANY human being can molest anyone, let alone a child. That said, I won't condemn Joe Pa at this point.

Did he actually WITNESS a crime? No.

After hearing about an alleged crime, did he report it to a supervisor? Yes.

How much he actually learned after his initial reporting of the alleged crimes, and how much investigating those around him made regarding the incidents, is still unfolding. That said, I'm more concerned with why the graduate student who witness the alleged incident, didn't go to police. Was that partially the fault of University Police for not following up, or the solely in the hands of the graduate student?

I'm more concerned as to why he didn't stop it to begin with. I would like to think that if it had been me I'd be dragging that man off the child if I didn't try to kill him first. I'm also concerned why he waited a day to even tell anyone. Sure his apprenticeship might have been in jeopardy but so freaking what. There are other schools, and if they wanted to take my apprenticeship away from me from stopping someone from raping that kid then I'd be going to another school.

That may very well be true. That being said, I don't think he should have been fired for allegedly not doing more. As an employer myself, I don't fire anyone until I have firm proof of something being committed. While I think he was morally obligated to look into it further, I think his firing was premature.

That being said, just reading about this makes me sick to my stomach. I feel for the alleged victims and hope they can somehow live happy lives, despite the trauma they suffered. It's disgusting that anyone can even think about doing something to a child.

Not sure how much media coverage this is getting in other parts of the country - like I said, here in Pittsburgh, the news is pretty much all PSU-centered right now - but Paterno himself has said to the media that he could have and should have done more.

I think the university's hands were tied at that point. I don't think he was a major player in this whole issue, but he was part of the group that could have but did not follow up to ensure that the issue had been resolved.

I agree that he is an icon here in PA, and it is sad that he is leaving PSU in disgrace rather than with the celebrations and honors he could have had upon his retirement. But years ago he made choices that came back to bite him in the azz. It happens. We should be questioning how this horrible thing was allowed to happen, not worry about the football program. (We in general, not you personally, Nos!)

Mike McQueary has been receiving threats and will not coach this weekend, and I suspect he will be fired shortly.

What some are choosing to ignore is the fact that federal law REQUIRES criminal conduct occurring on college campuses to be reported to law enforcement and all parties involved did NOTHING. No follow-up, no nothing - from McQueary to JoePa to the school's president. JoePa says he didn't follow up because Sandusky was no longer a "coach" for PSU. True fact. However, Sandusky was given the title Professor Emeritus, had an office on campus and unlimited access to PSU's campus and facilities. SOMEONE had a duty to act. They took the cowardly road and did nothing.

.... and people question why JoePa is being removed from consideration for the Medal of Honor.

You feel bad for Joe Paterno and the school. Wow.

I stated I feel bad for the kids as well. Of course they should come first. Please do not think I condone child rape/molestation.

You...feel bad for the kids as well?

I don't feel bad for JoePa. I don't feel bad for anyone who knew what was happening and did any less than report it over and over to higher and higher authorities until that child raper had his flowers thrown in prison where he can learn what it feels like to be violated.

JoePa and everyone else deserve no less than the shame they are receiving. They are disgusting.

Oh and those students rioting? Stay classy. You are rioting over a man who was fired for doing not enough to stop little kids from being raped? Really? This is who you want to stand behind?

If you read the quoted post you would see why I put as well (the previous poster was implying I only felt bad for the school and Paterno). I did not intend it to sound like they come last, WHICH is why I wrote they come FIRST in the very next sentence.

I do not condone the student rioting as I stated above. It's reflecting poorly on the PSU community.

Pump your brakes, homie. I didn't imply anything, because that's not what I do. If I wanted to say you only felt bad for the school & Paterno, that's what I would have typed. I am appalled that you feel bad for JoePa and Penn State AT ALL. They are not the victims here.

Thank you & good day.

I agree. This is a horrific thing that happened. I understand that the school's hands were tied, but I would have suspended him with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation. If all the charges were proven to be true, then there would most definitely be firings.

After this, I'm bowing out of this discussion. Just thinking about it gives me the creeps. :(

I clearly have an emic view and you clearly have an etic view of the situation ;)

You're absolutely right, the school and Joe Paterno are not victims. However, I don't exactly feel elated that my ala mater's reputation has been destroyed over such a horrible incident. PSU is a very generous school raising millions of dollars ever year in charity from THON, now people will remember it for this scandal. Everyone is losing because some man had uncontrollable urges and the administration did not act appropriately.

Specifically I am outraged at the man who raped these kids, angry that the administration allowed this to occur, and I feel bad for the Penn State community, which I am apart of as an alumni. I do feel bad for Paterno, but at the end of the day he made a huge mistake and now he is paying for it.

I hope you just disagree with me and don't think I am a horrible person :)

I'll remove myself from the discussion now. Again I hope I did not offend anyone, I take no personal offense from anyone's comments. It's all opinions.

I'm can see how you arrived at that and I am sorry. I was not saying that you said he was "more" responsible. I was pointing out that everyone is treating the situation like he did the crime and not talking about the actual perpetrator.

You say you don't watch the news and don't know what the media is saying. After admitting this you condemn the man and people who defend him? To me that seems a little silly.

And in my above post I stated what actions he took. He could have taken more, but he certainly didn't did nothing like the media claims.

I don't watch the news, so I don't know what the media is saying about him. I read a few articles, in a few publications, and decided that he's a creeper, and so are the people who feel badly for him and the program. Apparently that includes you.

Anyone that walks in on a grown man sodomizing a 10yr child, and fails to do anything about it, loses the right to call themselves a human being...

THIS is what I am saying. I have heard this "graduate student/assistant" was 28 years old when he saw this. TWENTY EIGHT YEARS OLD. I have seen pics of this guy. He is huge. Why didn't he pound the Creep in the face and the genitals when he saw what he saw? I get being shocked and confused, but you walked away????? I hope he has nightmares. I really do.

What about the maintenance man who walked in on something, too? He went and told his fellow coworkers and one guy says, "You could lose your job". Well, nice that all of their jobs were more important than standing up to some creep who deserves to get sooooo much more than he ever did to all of those kids. Just think, only 8 have come forward. ONLY 8. How many more do you think are out there????:angry::angry:

To the newbie in here, don't apologize. lol. You need to read a few more threads around here and realize that these hens like ruffling feathers and like getting their feathers ruffled.

and another thing....

I wonder if Sandusky knew that he had been seen? or was this guy just THAT bold to think no one would do anything? (not being a smart flowers about that, i am just sayin).

The University should be held liable. There was an incident back before the Joe Pa one that they knew about and did nothing except to tell him to stop taking showers with boys. SHAME ON THEM.

Perhaps Mike McQueary, who was indeed 28 years old at the time of the alleged offense, should have introduced Jerry Sandusky to "sounds of rhythmic slapping" when he had the opportunity. ^_^

Anyone seen/heard this? This is VERY VERY sickening.

http://www.nesn.com/2011/11/jerry-sandusky-rumored-to-have-been-pimping-out-young-boys-to-rich-donors-says-mark-madden.html

On Thursday morning, just hours after legendary head coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were fired by the school's board of trustees, Madden was asked on WEEI's The Dennis and Callahan Show what he believes the next piece of news will be.

What he said was twice as shocking as anything that's been released thus far.

"I can give you a rumor and I can give you something I think might happen," Madden told John Dennis and Gerry Callahan. "I hear there's a rumor that there will be a more shocking development from the Second Mile Foundation -- and hold on to your stomachs, boys, this is gross, I will use the only language I can -- that Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors. That was being investigated by two prominent columnists even as I speak."

There is going to be a huge shnizit storm hitting that town even more so if there is ANY truth to this. I am silently puking and this is really really hard to stomach.

Posted

I read that yesterday. Just when I think this thing can't get any worse. I pray to God that isn't true because that level of suffering for those kids is just too much. But seeing as how Sandusky started Second Mile back in the '70s, I suspect the 8 victims in the grand jury report is just the tip of the iceberg.
