You have NOTHING to lose by having your receipt checked. You aren't getting frisked or interrogated. You're not getting "hassled". You're not being detained. The problems that seem to arise from these situations come when self-important, lawsuit happy consumers cross up with poorly trained security ("please, please, PLEASE - give me a reason to sue you!!" - the worst kind of people IMO)...

It is the store's right and responsibility to protect their inventory.

So, how about this? If someone walks into a store, makes their way to the DVD players... picks up a BluRay player, and procedes out the front door - should LP just let them go?

Receipt checks are a colossal act of disrepect to a store's customers.

What you stand for is basically a police state.

"IF" you owned a store or managed one you would think other-wise

You see a computer going out the door of course he paid for the thing...otherwise he would not be leaving with it

Even though it is not in a plastic bag...

Maybe I would put the exit in such a way that you can't go out without first going through checkout.

So you herd the cattle outside...DOESN'T MATTER IF THEY WANT TO GO TO TACO BELL or McDONALDS or PIZZA HUT or SOME OTHER FOOD PLACE IN THE STORE (assuming they have one right at the front of the store)

DON'T LET THEM GO POTTY FIRST

DON'T LET THEM TURN IN THEIR RX PAPER ON THE WAY OUT THAT THEY FORGOT ON THE WAY IN...

Some stores also have banks at the front of the store...FORGET THAT

You could easily put in a foyer area with side businesses that allow access from after checkout or from the outside.

checking receipts is offensive since it assumes I am stealing something.

Exactly.

It's humiliating to be singled out by the Receipt Nazi because in their uneducated, untrained non-professional opinion I look like I might be up to something. Pfft.

Statistically the employee asking for my receipt is more likely to be stealing from their employer than me. If they really want to reduce theft perhaps should frisk their own employees every time they walk out the door.

I have far less problem with stores that check everyone's receipt at the door than those who pick and choose.

It is interesting to note that the reason some use to justify receipt checking... theft hurts everybody... is also one of the arguments others use for ID checking when using a credit card.

I think it depends more on the PRODUCT in question than the person. Checking a receipt for anyone's can of peas is stupid. Checking receipts for EVERY Plasma TV is common sense.

Also, although I work in retail, but I do NOT check receipts - nor does anyone else in the store. The only time we stop a customer at the door is if we know they stole something.

You prefer to punch people instead, no?

Only when they PUSH me, and PULL KNIVES on me to get away with a sack full of stolen products.

I've been pushed, threatened, spit at, swung at, cursed at, and kicked by thieves. I am supposed to show "respect" to these people? I don't care what you, or anyone else says - to hell with 'em... I have ZERO respect, ZERO pity, ZERO regard for these people.

I'll let you get back to suing the guy who took too long to start driving again after the light turned green. There's 3 seconds of your life you'll never get back.

P.S. - Please don't sue me for wasting your time with this post.

To stop paying customers and demand a receipt amounts to having ZERO respect for them in the first place.

How about: I just paid for the item at your register that is barely 20 feet away. If you have that great a concern that something hinky is going on, then step up the hiring practices for your loss prevention personnel.

After I have paid for an item, I have put things into my pocket, I am getting out car keys, putting on sunglasses and often times beginning a phone call. Having to stop the rest of things to dig a receipt back out is an unnecessary of time and does little to alter shrinkage numbers.

If you want to make it a requirement, then post sufficient notice at both the entrance of the store as well as again at the register.

Agreed....Most of the issues are due to incompetence. Some clerks can't even scan items properly. What's the point of having an anti-theft scanners and 1 out of 2 is not scanned properly.

Target is the bigger culprit based on my observation. Though they don't have any greeter/receipt check person at the door.

I just walk past the people, and if they want to tackle me to the ground they will

A) See self-defense take place

;) Be sued for it

C) Have assault charges filed

They don't get my business for precisely this reason.

Fact: theft also factors into prices per store... In the store I work at, the margin is 14-18% on some Gillette blades, but the markup is higher. A thief can crack the case and make off with $100-350 in product on those in 30 seconds if he knows when to strike.
