Doomsday Preppers on Nat Geo

I haven't seen the show, and know very little about "doomsday prepping". However...

 

Isn't one of the main points of prepping to be prepared to defend your "hoard"? And if so, WHY would you want to go on national TV and pretty much announce to the world that you have all of this stuff stockpiled?

I guess I have you and Doomsday Preppers to thank that my ideas now aren't met with looks like this.

I've almost talked DH into Rabbits...but DS says "They are NOT for eating! Only for petting, Mom!" I said ok, but we're going to name them Stew and Fricassee. He just and walked away.

I am trying to be supportive and I can understand the mentality to be prepared for natural disasters, or what have you.

Just not sure I could do chickens and goats. But I could definitely see the practicality behind having a food and water supply if something should happen. The state my dad lives in, many of the folks there have a two year supply or so. They sell preparations in the stores there for this type of thing.

Some of these people appear to have a mental disorder. Others seem to mainly want to have fun buy sinking their limited resources into toys and supplies they'll never use.

The ones that scare me are the Anarchist types. Happened to meet a firefighter who was a bit of a "survivalist" and he was telling stories about some of the people in his "community" who had the mindset of "we'll take what we want from others" etc..

Unfortunately, it might be a a legitimate plan. When I mentioned the people on the show kidding themselves, I generally think of a SWAT team. Can they defend themselves and their property from a disciplined group of people with armored vans, automatic weapons, flash bang grenades, night vision goggles/weapons, tear gas and snipers capable of killing them from over 1000 yards out. Your average deer rifle is capable of accurate shots from concealment around some of these people's homes, where they've only cleared out a few hundred yards.

Wouldn't one of the best preparation options is to keep a good many types of seeds? I mean, if you are looking at an ultimate disaster. (downfall of mankind type of thing)

 

You never know what type of disaster might occur...and some of them may mean having to leave your home (and area) and never come back...in such cases having a huge stock of canned foods and supplies isn't going to help much, especially if you have to leave fast.

 

Seeds, on the other hand, are small, travel well, and even when they get a couple of years old, you will still have some that are viable.

 

(granted, of course, you will still need food, water, and shelter until they grow and produce)

 

I'm just saying seed ought to be included in the "must have" category.

I agree with you. There are so many different levels of "prepping" though, I think those types will be looking for easier targets. They're nothing but locusts. But yes, I'm sure they will find many innocents to feed off of, sadly.

You would be correct, Tigz. It's why some level of gardening is usually one of the first recommendations for people looking to be more self-sufficient/save money.

From what I've read, many "Preppers" want to get the word out to the general population. For whatever reason(s)they have I guess they feel that the more people with food & water will = less starvation, crime and uprising?

You should name it "Dog". I believe all pigs are able to be house trained. Supposedly they are just as, if not more intelligent, as dogs and dolphins. It's really too bad they're so very tasty too.

This thread made me go back and start reading Lucifer's Hammer again.

 

I don't think I have read that since I was a teen.

JP is something of a survivalist. I loved that book. Also liked "Oath of Fealty" and other dystopian works.

I still have, from Lucifer's Hammer, an image of the surfer catching "the BIG one" and splatting into a downtown skyscraper. His rendition of that aftermath and recovery was quite good. Great book.

nothing...but 100K for a steel container and a hole in the ground? I'd rather plan for high probability events like retirement than low probability events like zombies.

 

I didn't say anything was wrong with it; just that the owner of the company sure knows a lot about marketing.
