Pfft. Now you know I would punch a coach in their face (or a parent for that matter) for trying to abuse my kid (and probably their own). I am not known in the neighborhood as "Momma Nem" for nothing. If I will stand out in front of a neighbor who is driving too effen fast in the mornings and let them know I have gas cans and matches, I would certainly not hesitate to do so just because someone thinks they're going to be the next Coach K. Besides I dont have my kids in cheer, or football or baseball for that matter. I'd rather they learn/know how to round house kick someone in the face aka Deluxe Mary style. I wouldn't and won't allow their Tae Kwon Do coaches to mistreat them either.

These two heifers knew damn well making a kid run for THREE hours was wrong. That's a more than a flipping marathon. They are nothing but low-down, dirty, white trash and their "parenting skills" show it. If the DA goes with Murder, because they had prior knowledge of a medical condition, then good for the DA for having the boy bits large enough to do it. I don't think they'll be convicted, but you never know. I am hopeful they will both get shanked in prison and end the discussion right there. :glare:

Yep.

Just as coaches and parents know that similar activities are wrong when participating in sports. They choose to ignore them.

For most runners however the average time for completing a marathon is 4 hours 30 minutes for men and 5 hours 10 minutes for women.

As I recall, my high school chemistry teacher did them under 2:30. I guess that was pretty good.

Don't tell me that you are one of those parents that think that cheerleading is bad.....

I don't think it is bad. I think it is dangerous.

It can be if proper safety isn't followed. My girls are lucky and with last season as an exception, they've always had great coaches that would NEVER risk the safety of any girl for a win.

They've done this going on 5 years now. They've never had an injury. The only injury I can think of my girls getting from a risky sport is when my youngest's coach (competitive gymnastics) pushed her down into the splits (the bad leg) and over stretched her. It seems to be a recurring injury now....

Ohio doesn't even allow public schools to stunt. Only private schools can. I think we are one of the few states in the country that doesn't allow stunting.

My girls have never dropped someone into an injury.

I think the problem is that a lot of the schools allow girls to stunt without the supervision of properly trained coaches.

My girls are tumblers, especially my youngest. She has her backhandspring, front handspring, standing and running back tuck, running front tuck, Layout..she has been sorta working on her full although I'm in no big hurry for this to happen. It is hard on the joints because until you have it perfectly, you can land without your joints (hips, knees, ankles) being in alingnment, which greatly increase the risk of injury.

Kids can get hurt in any sport........

And I don't know why I just said all that......

There is no doubt that kids can be hurt in any sport.

I do think that some schools and programs do more dangerous stunts with a win at all costs mentality.

You mention that you think the problem with injuries may be improperly trained coaches and lack of supervision. If a parent or anyone else allowed a kid to do something dangerous without supervision, they would be lambasted all over the internet and charged with child endangerment. Heck, they would get that treatment even if they were supervising a dangerous activity.

We are now finding out about how dangerous football is with regards to long term brain damage. Parents are given the stink-eye if they smoke in front of their kids, but no one says a word if parents allow their kids to play football.

I'm still wondering about this "medical condition " can't find a reference.

just sbecause she had a seizure from being severly dehydrated / low sodium level

doesn't mean she had a seizure disorder.

Recently, I watched one of those Attorney shows (Kathy Bates I think?) where an "expert" testified to the fact that the helmets didn't protect all that much. While is was a fiction show, it was still food for thought....

It all comes down to proper training. I see videos on youtube of girls doing stunts on concrete. I would NEVER allow my girls to stunt someone outside of a gym with a spring floor or at minimum a cheer floor. I gotta admit, the girls love to stunt in the pool, but that is probably the safest place to do it! My girls are main bases and have never been flyers. Although my youngest, when having strong bases, has flown before. She is a really tight flyer.... BUT my girls are "thick" as in muscular and would never be flyers. My youngest would love to, but unless she starved herself (which I would NEVER let that happen) its just not gonna happen lol. And I'm fine with that. Flyers have the riskiest part of the job so to speak...

We have Alabama, we have a trailer house, and we have a 46 year old grandma of a 9 year old. The stereotypes, they write themselves.

Sad? Yes. I'm not sure it's a murder, though.

The stereotype of adults having kids?

not seizure disorder, a bladder disorder. Most of the articles said "bladder disorder", however one said it was polyuria....but I can't find it now.

If that is indeed what she had....well if you couple large amounts of urine output, and extreme exercise (which will cause the body to lose even more fluids)...that would be pretty much a recipe for disaster.

The typical Southern trailerhood stereotype, naturally. And 46 is just a bit too young to have a 9 year old granddaughter, so I'm sure they're all upstanding, ivy league citizens. Actually, I saw their mug shots on another site and, yep...everything I imagined and more.

Good point about the need for proper training/equipment/etc. needed for sports. I'm not going to address the coaches and instructors that act stupidly. Sports instructors and trainers who know what they are doing realize the difference between pushing kids to do improve and pushing them beyond endurance. They gradually increase the difficulty of the tasks and have proper equipment, water, sugar/salt supplements, and knowledge of when to pull a kid out of action. In high school, I signed up for swim team and remember the "hell week" before class (4 hours of swimming drills of various lengths and paces). However, the coach would let us sit out for a bit if needed. Also, we all needed physicals and medical clearance beforehand. He was a good coach. My parents also allowed me to sign up for SCUBA at 13. Done properly, it is a safe sport. Done improperly, there are many dangers. Again, though, there were lots of classroom lectures, pool sessions, and other qualifications that needed to be met before the instructor let us go into an open water (ocean) environment.

My point is, this little girl was likely unaccustomed to hours of running without breaks, and her caretakers did not supplement her with food and water to keep her salt/water intake at proper levels. In my opinion, they should be charged with something akin to manslaughter. Were they monitoring her for safety? Not likely. The difference between this and the boy who walked 5 miles to school is the pace of activity and the corresponding effects on the body. Also, this punishment is whack for lying about a candy bar. Why not just take candy of her treat menu for an appropriate period of time and/or assign chores? On a side note, I also did lots of forced hiking as a child on vacations. However, we had plenty of breaks, fluids, and snacks to supplement glucose and salt loss. In other words, we were well-monitored.

not that they are soley responsible for this, but where were all the neighbors who saw the girl running?

she had to be dragging - I can't believe that she was really running towards the end. she had to look distressed

There are different levels of murder. I consider this third degree felony murder.

"a killing that resulted from a depraved heart or extreme recklessness"

I am reposting as this is the clearer answer from a legal stance. Sorry that it was overlooked, yet I caught it and considered it worthy of re-iterating

Funny how this topic can side track when the REALITY is a child is dead. Nothing can change that result.

I find this no different than the lady in my area that was convicted in the death of her foster child for salt poisoning. She put creole seasoning in his sippy cup, after he complained of being hungry and had already finished his lunch (my belief is she did this often and that is what the prosecution alleged as well).

He died too from her behavior. Most probably because she also waited 1.5 hours before taking him to the hospital after he began showing symptoms of being very ill.

When you do things with reckless disregard for safety, I have a problem with it. That goes for cheerleading and football coaches as well. If they are not giving water breaks or spotting the girls or otherwise, being reckless and negligent, then they should be prosecuted.

ETA: I have no idea what the laws of that state are. But the lady in my area, would have probably been charged with the same thing he was (I think criminal negligence resulting in death or something like that), except that she was the one who admitted putting the seasoning in his cup and he was younger than the age of 6 (which makes it eligible for capital murder). She was convicted of the capital murder and is serving life in prison (the least sentencing available). Of course she is appealing so who knows how that will work out (though it's been denied before for her).
