I just wanted to take a moment to laugh outloud at the mod's thread topic.

Complaints, discussions and rants regarding perceived merchant violations of CCC policy

It's a violation of VISA & MC, and even DISCOVER and AMEX policty. It's not perceived violations, they are violations.

I am just posting what the start of the topic thread is. If you wanna waste your time moaning about how some company is trying to stop ID theft by trampling over your rights then more power to you. I am sure the 10 people who will boycott those companys will hurt the bottom line. In fact, I may go out and shortsell the stock now and make myself a fortune.

I don't blame the merchant for asking for ID. The store is the one that takes the hit if they get a bogus card - not VISA, not the customer, not the bank, but the store. My local Wal-mart sometimes asks to see my driver's license. I don't see it as a big deal.

DON'T LET ME STOP YOU!!!

WHY NOT GIVE THEM YOUR SS# AND YOUR CELL # AND YOUR HOME ADDRESS AND KIDS AGES...MOTHERS NAME AND HOW MUCH YOU MAKE PER HOUR WHILE YOUR AT IT!!!

A DL and what your saying isnt even in the same relm of thinking!

Theres a purpose for asking for id(right or not), not any of the others you mentioned!

The point is that they mak you feel like some sort of degenerate crook by asking for your ID. I usually decline and tell them to stick it, unless I'm hungry and trying to buy lunch.

I went ahead because I saved money and really was meaning to get some new shirts, but it was just a matter of principle to tell him he was wrong.

At footlocker you should have signed the slip, took back the card and left with the shoes.

You legally paid for the item when they swiped it through and you signed... thjat would not be theft.

Wow, I must be strange, because on the back of my cards i have written "CID". In other words, if they don't ask for my ID I get pissed. I've been a victim of ID Theft, and if the merchants would have obeyed the "CID", maybe i would not have been a victim. I didn't know people actually had problems with that...

A merchant has the right to outright *REFUSE* the card if there is not a valid signature on the back.

Most just check your ID like you want... they know it's your card, you feel safe... everyone wins (and they aren't breaking policy because the card is NOT signed in that case)

No George you are mistaken. I spend all my time fighting REAL abuse, REAL harrassment, and REAL crimes. I am not gonna waste my time fighting this when some company is trying to protect themselves and their customers from ID theft. The ONLY reason visa/mc does not have a check all ID policy is because alot of business is set up where no ID is required i.e. gas stations, grocery self service isles, internet orders, ect. As I stated before with your considerable time feel free to help me with real abuse out there. I could use it.

Checking ID is abuse of the contract the merchants signed. Demanding ID is customer harassment.

you call the 5 seconds it takes to show your ID harrassment? Are you kidding me? you wanna see some real harrassment come step into my shoes for a week or better yet step into the shoes of some of the people who email me on a daily business. I am sorry George and I have known you for some years now on the forums but your problems do not even hold a candle to some of the problems going on right now from abusive CAs, OCs, CRAs and yes victims of real ID theft. Just wait until that new crap BK law comes into play. I fully expect CA abuse to double or even triple within the month and I am preparing for it now. I wish you would help.

one difference George. You don't have to do business with them. We are not so lucky with the CAs and especially the CRAs out there.

I HAVE ZERO PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH ID THEFT...I CAN'T HELP YOU WITH MY EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF TIME I WASTE HERE DAILY

Only thing that comes any where close is a BANK CASH ADVANCE that was never finalized (NOT ME DOING IT)

CITIBANK sent me an E-MAIL to call SECURITY

NO EXPIRE DATE WAS ENTERED SO IT WAS DENIED

They kinda' inferred like the bank was typing the number manually and MESSED UP

They sent me a new number and card anyway...

I'M TAKING 1/2 OF AUGUST AND ALMOST ALL OF SEPTEMBER OFF FROM WORK SO I CAN BE HERE 24/7 WASTING TIME!!!!!!!!!

How about abduction, rape, assault and battery? Are those REAL enough crimes for you? Maybe you live in a nice safe world where spreading around your personal info has no consequences, but some of us don't. The law doesn't protect us from these crimes so we have to protect ourselves in whatever way we can. I refuse to stay indoors 24/7 hidden from the world, but if doing a simple thing like keeping strangers from violating my rights will better ensure my safety, I'll do it.

I respect a lot of what you say on these boards, but on this subject, I feel that your not in touch with reality.

People have not been aware that id theft by the theft of CC's (the actual card not just the number) is 23% in America

ID theft by store employees has risen to 17% How? 1st your CC info and then "I need to see your ID"

It's said that if the level of consumer ignorance and carelessness with ones personal info continues at the current rate, that 17% will surpass the 23% over 2x in less than 2 yrs.

If you are comfortable with giving away personal info, why not post your DL, passport, and SS Card on the internet?

If someone really does this, I will truely respect their idea of having it be ok to show ID on a signed card.
