Hi everyone, I have an old medical bill from a hospital in a different state many years ago that I failed to pay. I currently live in California, but the original bill was in Maryland. It was for an ER visit. The report only shows up on TransUnion and occurred in 2007. The bill is less than $100 so I don't mind paying it in full. I did pick up one of their phone calls many years ago and when I asked them to send me a statement for the full amount, they refused and said they had sent statements many times (which I have never received), so I said I would call them back to pay it later.

Anyway, I just want to have this paid off and removed from the credit report. I read something involving the fall off date (which I assume is 2014), but not sure how to utilize it. I've also read a bit about HIPAA stuff, but I don't need it to get too complicated. And also ran across information about validating the debt in the introductory threads. But I am not sure how best to approach this.

I also have one other bill from CMRE Financial Services, which they did send a statement, but this has not appeared on any credit reports, and which I also do not mind paying off. So I'm just wondering if I should call them and ask for a full bill, or write them asking to validate the debt and send a statement, which I can pay online, etc.

Thanks so much for any help through this complicated process.

Thanks for the reply. Just FYI, I know why I am billed these things and I should pay them off, which I can easily do, and the goal is just to get that NCO entry off the credit report. I have obtained the credit reports from all three agencies, and I mentioned only NCO financial is listed on TransUnion. The other two agencies do not list it. I forgot to mention that CMRE Financial is from Aug/Sept 2011 (that's the last letter they sent). Does that change anything?

The problem is I'm not disputing anything. I just want to pay it off and get it off the credit report. It seems a long drawn out process for a trivial amount. I've seen people ask in writing to have the entry be deleted from the credit report after paying them.

Also, how does opting out help? The NYTimes article wasn't clear on that.

Do what you want. The reason to opt out in credit repair is to help prevent your data from being sold to data miners who will then resell to CAs who poison your reports.

The amount may be trivial, but once you start paying a CA you will have all sorts of problems coming up out of the woodwork. If you can establish that the reporting CA obtained the account directly from the OC, ( which is the purpose of the initial dispute letter) you can pay the OC and get a total deletion from your reports.

If you pay the CURRENT reporting CA, they may or may not change the report to a "paid" collection which is WORSE for your credit as an unpaid one. More likely, you will have just paid $$ down a rathole with no effect on your report.

follow whychats process (handwritten letter).

I bet TU will remove it and your job will be done. TU was the easiest to get removals from, especially old, small amounts.
