That's the first I've ever heard of such a huge differential between cash/credit prices.

 

Personally, I think it's probably a one-and-off publicity stunt.

 

I strongly doubt that the Morris County gas station will keep that differential for long unless other stations are willing to take them head on (in which case it would temporarily dispel my beliefs that gas companies participate in an "unspoken/unwritten collusion").

 

Gas in northern New Jersey is cheap compared to New York City prices. But the gap isn't as big as it used to be (I recall an average of 30-40 cent differential between Bergen County gas prices and NYC prices about 15 years ago. Now, it's more like a 15-20 cent differential)

2) Databases are not always reliable all the time. Though I daresay card users will probably drive by and go to the nearest pump that has more reasonable prices.

Ehhh....the small restaurant i frequent adds a "10% PITA" fee for credit and debit cards. Owner says dealing with the CC companies, waiting for money etc isn't worth the money, and he wouldn't take them period if not for his partners (wife) insistence. He has been in business for 41 years and is still packed everyday for breakfast and lunch.

many of hte online price sites will show the lowest price for a grade, not the split pricing.

 

As to the specific station...it is worth noting that it appears the particular station is not in the ZIP code cited given that there were NO Exxon stations that I could see in the page of listings...

 

Would I go out of my way to save 40 cents or so a gallon? Not likely. Would I pay cash to do so once I was there? You betcha...even if it was only the Miata and the 10 gallons it takes per month.

IMHO, they should focus on creating a business model that means they are profitable enough to deduct biz expenses from their tax liabilities. unprofitable businesses should go the way of the dinosaurs.

I saw a "cash only" gas station someplace, and it had no cars at it. 1/4 mile down the road was a Mobil which had most of the pumps with cars at them.

ONE CASH ONLY PLACE finally moved into the 20th century (NOW TAKE CREDIT CARDS)

 

They are now packed with cars at the pumps (before they only had two cars in the parking lot **EMPLOYEES** and nobody at the pumps)
