would an Amex BCE work as your first Amex card? I have no Amex history and neither does anyone I'm close to so I need to atleast get an Amex card this year to backdate future cards to 2012.

thanks

Yes, absolutely. I picked up the Blue Cash Preferred for this very reason.

What I'm trying to figure out now, is if by opening my own Amex first, have I missed the opportunity to get backdated by being added as an AU. Unfortunately I have no family in the country so I'm still not sure who would add me as an AU, but I'm looking. I may need to bribe someone at work. (which would be an odd conversation)

My AAOA is rather low given that I only picked up my last two cards in the 6-9 months, I had never thought of getting a second (or third card) until I started reading CB daily.

I've been a member since 1996 and I recently upgraded from green to PR gold. I added my wife to the card and she received it with a member since date of 2012. So I called AMEX to backdate and they told me they don't adjust that date anymore. It could be the rep I spoke with so I'm going to try again in a few days. I'll post back after my next attempt. Anybody else heard this lately?

This is highly relevant to my own personal situation. Any input here would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!

Smokey, any update? (or input from Bob before I pay a co-worker to add me as an AU)

It took Johnny over 30 calls, try and try again.

No luck yet. My wife called and she wasn't able to make it happen. We're not giving up though. We'll keep trying.

Good luck! This probably means I'm out, I wasn't able to convince my coworker to add me AND call Amex about this, possibly multiple times.

After graduating high school in 2005 my father added me as an AU on his Amex gold. Fast forward 7 years on Feb 19th I applied for an Amex green i was instantly approved. Hoping that I would only get hit with one inquiry, I decided to go ahead and apply for the Gold Delta SkyMiles. I was also instantly approved and was indeed only hit with one inquiry for both apps.

I received my cards on Monday with a member since date of 2012. I also registered my account online and the 2012 member since date was reflected there as well. Yesterday I called the number on the back of my green card and spoke to a very friendly rep. I stated that when i received my cards I noticed that my member since date was incorrect since I had a gold card in 2005. She put me on hold for about 3 minutes. When she came back she didn't ask any other questions and said that she put in a request to have the date changed to 2005 and that I should have my new cards in about 10 days.

When I checked my account online this morning my member since date was still 2012. A few hours later I checked again and it was changed to 2005!!! I was actually very surprised with how easy my backdating experience was. After reading what other's had to go through I thought I was going to have to make phone call after phone call until I got to the right rep. Maybe I was just lucky enough to get the right rep on the first try.

Congratulations! I think the situation may be the key. Since you were already an AU, maybe it was easier for them to backdate you. I called AMEX again yesterday and still no luck. I'm going to back off for now. I don't want AMEX to see me as a nut job. I've had no problems up until this point and I don't want to start any. My wife is already over 800...I was just trying to score a 16 year card for her.

Backdating success!!

I had an AMEX Blue Cash from 2006 until 2009. A couple weeks ago I got accepted for an AMEX Green. I called a CSR immediately after my application went through and asked her about backdating my account. She said that was standard procedure and would happen automatically. I don't think she really understood what I was talking about because this did not happen...

Fortunately, I still have one of my old AMEX Blue Cash cards. I registered the card on the AMEX website and created a new login. The site said my card was cancelled, but also listed me as being a "Member Since 2006." When my Green card finally came in the mail, it said "Member Since 12." I registered the card with the same online login information so I had both cards listed in the same account. Then I tried to get backdating done online by sending a message to AMEX using my online account. This did not work and I was told to just call CSR again. I did that, told the woman on the phone the problem, was put on hold for a long time and voila! They are now sending a new card in the mail!! I wasn't even asked for information about my Blue Cash. I'm guessing linking the cards online made things easier.

Just called in to get DW account backdated. She was AU on her fathers Amex Green in the United Kingdom, but cannot find her card.

Went to the "anything else" CSR and he called into special handling. Came back and said the system automatically does it based on SSN, they only see one account under SSN and they cannot backdate to UK accounts.

Would calling card replacement make any difference? Looks like she is out of luck to backdate to the 80's

Fortunately, I still have one of my old AMEX Blue Cash cards.

Moral of the story is if financial things go bad in your life, save your AMEX card as a souvenir. As far as I know, that will always work for backdating to your original membership year.

I have my old Amex Gold card number on a canceled check I wrote in 1977 for the AF. Unfortunately, the number was recycled and the CSR indicated it now belongs to someone else. No record of me. No backdate.

Saw an earlier question on this but no answer: Has the window of opportunity for AU backdating closed? I recently got an AMEX again and it shows 1989 (when I first opened an AMEX) on login but member since 2011 on my card (which I got fixed). I added my wife as AU in Dec 2011. What are the chances or thoughts on how to get her AMEX reporting date backdated to 1989?

Window is closing, but there may be an exception for genuine spouses.

Any suggestions on how to ask for spouse? Just mouse that it was done for others? Any other good reasons as this really is her first AMEX card. Also, call customer service number or the credit bureau unit?

Thanks in advance.

I would just keep calling, and say "My ONLY WIFE is an AU on my AmEx, and I would like her Member Since Year to match mine."

Or something to that effect.

Posted this a few days ago and think this is where it belongs:::

So I unfroze my Experian( which has 14 inquiries) and decided to give it a try 2 days ago. Received a message saying needs further review. So of course I'm thinking a denial for sure. Well being that I'm a bit impatient I checked the status right away and it said "Home Address Verification needed".

So called the number they listed and made a 3 way call to my bank to verify address. The bank verified and BOOM I'm APPROVED !!! Funny thing is I tried for this card a year ago with only 25% UTIL and a 680 EX Fico score and was denied.

I have 14 accounts in good standing, 53% UTIL, AAOA is 2.7 yrs, a charge off from B of A in 2007 that was paid in 2010 for less then half.

They pulled all 3 bureaus for this card. Ex has 14 inq, TU has 4, EQ has 4.

Her's the interesting part: I had a old account with AMEX (Green card) in March of 1995. It had a $500 limit and a $385 unpaid balance.

So they closed the card for non payment. I was 17 and was not responsible enough I guess. Gotta love the 90's !!! :yahoo:

This account was on my credit reports up until 2005 then it just fell off.

So fast forward now and I go to activate new Zinc card (NPSL) online and it says MEMBER SINCE 1995 !!! Although the card I just received today says member since 2012.

I immediately called card replacement and requested a new card reflecting my 1995 member year. The kind lady said "Oh sure and by the way were so sorry this happened." She then said that their system did not pick up the old member year fast enough before the card was printed. I then said can you expedite this to me?? Oh sure she says, you'll have it by 2moro afternoon by way of UPS.

...Did I just sneak back in???

Okay no luck trying to get my wife's AU card backdated to my member date. Talked to cust rep and their supervisor. Talked to credit bureau unit. All were sympathetic but said they didn't have power to do it. So where do I go from here? Any thoughts on what department or level has the power? Maybe the retention unit?

I just had some success which will bump my <1yr AAOA to about 5.5 years in the coming weeks. I was at 770 prior so I may finally join the 800 club next month!

Took 12 calls, but in the end my advice would be keep calling card replacement directly. If the person who answers the phone has to put you on hold and they sound like they don't know what you are talking about, just thank them, say you have to go, hang up and call back to get someone new.

I had several calls that lasted >30 minutes and they ended in failure. The two times I had success it was a quick 2-3 minute call with someone who knew what they were doing AND had the authority to make it happen. Asking for supervisors or managers didn't help.

It seems like they are not backdating pure AU cards anymore (where someone adds you and you backdate to their year) but I had success adding someone to my new account who was no longer an amex user (but was way back when) and working it that way (parent in my case).
