Great informative thread. I have a question about building d&b report. I just applied for d&b number, got it right away. I have been in business since 1986. I think they already had me listed. I think I appled to have number modified (cant remember it was 2am). I pulled up my info, and got a eupdate password no problem. I run an auto repair business and have a long track record with current vendors. I have a line of credit with bank. It is close to max, but paid automatically every month. Can I see my rating or paydex, or update creditors info without buying any credit builder info? Thanks

Can anyone help me with this?

Got a DUNS number by saying that I needed it to go goverment bids

and the next day I logged in and presto my numbers there...then today

I get this message:

Warning:

This account has been locked out.

Please call customer service to reset your password.

(866) 472-7362

What's up with this? Has this happened to anyone else on this board?

Let me know your comments.

Thanks.

It could be as simple as when D&B tried to call your company to verify that you were real and no one answered the phone. Once you "blacklisted" it can be very difficult to get off of the list. You might even have to start from scratch

I would like to know how some of my vendors can provide information on my business and my dealings with them to D&B for inclusion on my business credit report.

If that business does not have a reporting contract with D&B, you will have to pay D&B for their creditbuilder program to add the vendor. Call and check with your vendor, as some vendors only report a portion of their accounts, or only report if you default.

I had applied for my DUNs number a few days ago online, I was not enthusuastic that I would have to wait 30 days for my number.

I followed the advice that I read in this thread:

1. Called to inquire about DUNS nu,ber status.

2. Adv. that I needed to apply for a few federal grants within the new few days.

3. (The rep tried to sell me the "additional service".) I adv. that I would need to talk to me business parters. Took her direct number in case I needed her (just to be polite)she transferred me to the Federal Dept.

4. Gave the rep all of my info:

- Business Name

- Bus. Address & Phone number

- Other information that it asked me when I was applying online.

5. Got DUNS # at the end of the phone call.

The rep also said that the number would not be active for another 2 business days, but I got it!!!!

P.S. I have not filed my Inc. papers yet. She said it will be set up a as sole propriator until I call back to notify them that this has been done (she let me know that she could not locate it in my state's Secratary of State Office......

You should have waited until you were incorporated before applying for a DUNS. Too late now.

Once you incorporate, and your DUNS is active, you will be able to start with the basic net 30 accounts. Did you get your eupdate log in information when you spoke with the person from D&B? That will tracking your progress a lot easier.

Darn it!!! I didn't think about that. Will it cause any major issues?? Or is it just a matter of waiting until I Incorporate to to attempt to get any credit???m

I did not get that information.. Maybe I will call back later in the week and get that info..

So I just got off the phone with a salesperson, basically told me it was gonna be 30 business days. Like above, can I just call the federal govtment part and say I wanna do federal contracts even tho i am in their "system" persay? If so, is there anything in particular other then my info I need to provide them?

The rep I spoke with told me that I would need to register with CCR... (government contractor thing..) and advised that if I did not I run the risk of hacing problems later on....

Yup, if you got you DUNS through the government 'express' option, if you do not use it for government grants/applications you can get your file flagged. Has happened to gettingstarted.

I looked at the government grants and loan site. Why can someone not just apply for a small business loan and therefore get the DUNS number ASAP? Will this bring on a "S" storm or what? I LLC'd in Feb of this year and might qualify for a small business loan or grant(not sure on requirements)?

Also, has anyone ever thought of there is Experian,Transunion and Equifax for personal credit but why is there just DUNS? Or is the paydex considered a seperate entity from DUNS? I mean kinda seems like a monopoly on business credit reporting? And therefore they can get away with the "30 business days" to get a number unless you pay for it!

Posted (edited)

Well, Experian and Equifax have different divisions for personal and business. Dun and Bradstreet is strictly a business credit rating agency, they have nothing to do with personal credit. A paydex score is one of several scoring models D&B uses, they others are; a business score, and rating. They all take into different business information, employees, income, credit history, time in business, etc. Having a paydex is just the basic D&B scoring system. Your DUNS is the number of your D&B file, it is not a score or anything itself.

There are other business credit rating agencies, but D&B is currently the largest in the number of businesses it rates. They do NOT have a monopoly, and are starting to lose market share to Equifax and Experian.

On to the other part of your post,

Getting a DUNS through the government grant site can pose a risk. People have had their files flagged because they applied through the government site and never used it for government purposes. Getting your DUNS through the regular site does take about 30 days, but take into consideration building business credit takes a lot longer, and requesting your DUNS is just the first step.

There really are no short cuts in building credit for your business. You will need a LOT of patience.

Maybe I am wrong, but it would not just be simple if you register with CCR and apply for maybe one loan/grant and leave it at that???

Then, if for some reason, they search for your company, they can see that it has been used for that purpose???

I would think it would just look bad if you don't use it for its intended purpose at all....

ON a side note, should I wait for my DUNS number before I get accounts setup like Viking and Uline?I really need products from both vendors probably before I get my Duns number, can I go ahead with the setting up with the accounts since it takes a few months for them to report anyways?

Posted

So should I wait on the DUNS number til I order from Uline or whats the general consensus here? Same thing with Quill... got a catalog coming and wanna start an account with them ASAP too as there are things I can use soon.

Posted

I ordered from quill without duns number, im not sure about uline because they require trade references and bank references so you may wanna wait unless you already got them. Im still waiting on Net 30 approval with ULINE after my first prepaid order

Posted

I placed an order with ULInE last week using the bill me option order was only $60 they emailed me saying I had to prepay the order which I did then called to ask about net 30 they faxed me a credit app saying they needed to verify my trade references via fax is that new?

I have been reading all the treads on D&B but found nothing about what type of business you must / should have to receive your D&B #.

Right now I am a sole, should I register as a LLC?

I am looking to expand my farm for a fresh produce account with Costco, any suggestions?
